Montreal GM Bob Gainey's new No. 1 priority is defenceman Sheldon Souray, who is also in line to become an unrestricted free agent. With the National Hockey League salary cap expected to jump from $44 million to $48 million next season, Gainey said the organization thinks it has enough to pay Souray. "The question is whether he thinks we have enough," Gainey said. "We'll start talking to him right away and we hope we can get a deal done before July 1. We take these things one at a time and every time we sign someone, we see what we need and what we have left over to spend."
