The Anaheim Ducks announced Thursday that the team has signed defenseman Matt Smaby to a one-year contract. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed. Smaby, 26, appeared in 32 games for the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2010-11, going scoreless with a +2 rating and 17 penalty minutes (PIM). Selected by Tampa Bay in the second round (41st overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry = Draft, Smaby has earned 6 points with 106 PIM in 122 career NHL games. He made his NHL debut with the Lightning on Oct. 4, 2007 vs. New Jersey a=nd set career highs in points (4), assists and appearances (43) during his rookie season in 2008-09.
