Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman John Klingberg will have hip surgery at the end of month and miss the remainder of the season, general manager Brad Treliving announced Wednesday.

"I'll have a better idea as we finalize what is going to get done and ultimately once they do the procedure of how long rehab is going to be, but it's safe to say a five- to six-month range," Treliving said.

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Timothy Liljegren was placed on long-term injured reserve Saturday, two days after he sustained a lower-body injury in a game against the Boston Bruins.

Liljegren was injured Thursday when he fell into the boards after a trip by Bruins captain Brad Marchand during the first period. Marchand was not penalized on the play.

Chicago Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson said Thursday that winger Corey Perry successfully "neutralized" Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer Ryan Reaves during their game this week, one day after Reaves questioned Perry's toughness.

The Blackhawks defeated the Maple Leafs 4-1 on Monday, with Perry scoring the eventual winning goal in the second period. Reaves and Perry sparked a scrum in the first period, though neither player was penalized. Later, cameras caught the two jawing at each other at the benches.

Asked about Perry on Wednesday, Reaves said he hasn't liked the 19-year NHL veteran since the day he met him on the ice.

Auston Matthews registered his second hat trick in two games to open the season, and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Minnesota Wild 7-4 on Saturday night.

William Nylander had two goals and an assist for Toronto, and Ilya Samsonov made 28 saves. Calle Jarnkrok had a goal and an assist, and Tyler Bertuzzi also scored. Mitchell Marner and Morgan Rielly each had two assists.

Matthews is the fifth player in NHL history to open a season with back-to-back hat tricks, joining Alex Ovechkin (2017-18), Cy Denneny (1917-18), Joe Malone (1917-18) and Reg Noble (1917-18).

Forward Noah Gregor signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

Gregor, 25, had joined the Maple Leafs on a professional tryout prior to training camp.

Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Matt Murray is expected to miss at least six to eight months after undergoing successful bilateral hip surgery Monday.

Murray had already been ruled out for the season by Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving at the outset of training camp. The team put Murray on long-term injured reserve in late July.

The Vancouver Canucks obtained forward Sam Lafferty from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday for a 2024 fifth-round pick.

Lafferty, 28, can be an unrestricted free agent after this season.

"As we work towards becoming a tougher team to play against, Sam will add some grit and sandpaper to our lineup," Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said in a statement. "We also like the way he skates and can back players off with his speed. He is a good addition to our forward group and has shown he can also use his speed effectively in a penalty-killing role."

Natalie Darwitz, who won three medals with the U.S. women's national team, is among the inaugural group of general managers in the new Professional Women's Hockey League.

The first six general managers in the PWHL -- a six-team league that will debut in January -- are Darwitz (Minnesota), Danielle Marmer (Boston), Pascal Daoust (New York), Daniele Sauvageau (Montreal), Michael Hirshfeld (Ottawa) and Gina Kingsbury (Toronto).
