Matthew Barzal Fined, Will Play In Game 6 Wednesday

Jun 22, 2021 6:13 PM

With their season on the line Wednesday night, the New York Islanders will have the services of their best player, Mathew Barzal.

Barzal, the high-flying forward who has six goals and 12 points this postseason, was fined $5,000 Tuesday, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for a cross-checking penalty on Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Jan Rutta in Game 5 Monday night. But Barzal was not suspended by the league, and will play Wednesday as the Islanders look to keep their season alive after a humiliating 8-0 loss.

Isles' Trotz:'We've Just Gotta Man Up'

Jun 22, 2021 11:19 AM

After the Lightning steamrolled his Islanders 8-0 in Game 5 of the semifinals, coach Barry Trotz had a simple message for his players in the locker room: They'll have to earn the right to keep playing because another effort like the one Monday night and their season is over.

"I just think the game, this result, how we played ... if that doesn't motivate us, then I'm not too sure what will," said Trotz, who watched the Lightning take a 3-2 series lead. "There's nothing I can say that will motivate them. We've just gotta man up. We have to understand all the things we need to do, and [that] this group does. We have to leave our best game out there now. Because obviously tonight wasn't our best game. We put ourselves in a real tough bind."

Barry Trotz Calls Out Refs For Missed Call

Jun 16, 2021 10:42 AM

Barry Trotz was livid on the Islanders' bench.

The Lightning's Ondrej Palat had just scored to give his team a 2-1 lead in Game 2 of their playoff semifinal series on Tuesday night. He did so as the referees and linesmen missed that the Lightning had seven skaters on the ice at the same time, which should have stopped play.

Trotz yelled at the referees, failing to get their attention. Later, his assistant coach, Lane Lambert, used his video tablet to call up a screen grab, showing the Lightning with too many men on the ice. Trotz pointed to the visual aid as he continued to bellow at the officials following the second-period goal.

"The second goal hurt quite a bit. [Because] if they get the third one, there's a little bit more separation," Trotz said after the game.

Jon Cooper: 'Our Minds Weren't There' In Game 1 Loss

Jun 13, 2021 11:19 PM

The New York Islanders were mentally prepared for Game 1 of their Stanley Cup semifinal series. The Tampa Bay Lightning were not.

"Our work ethic was there. Our compete [level] was there. Our minds weren't there," said Lightning coach Jon Cooper, whose team lost 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. "Some of our decisions were poor. That's what happens when you get this deep into the playoffs. You have to have everything working in unison and we just weren't there tonight."

The Lightning looked disjointed in Game 1. Their passes didn't connect. They weren't on the same page offensively.
