Lightning Send J.T. Miller To Canucks For Draft Picks

Jun 22, 2019 4:15 PM

The Tampa Bay Lightning earned a little breathing room under the NHL salary cap by shipping forward J.T. Miller to the Canucks on Saturday.

Miller was moved for goalie Marek Mazanec, a third-round pick in the 2019 draft and a conditional first-round pick in either 2020 or 2021. Tampa Bay used the third-rounder on Swedish goaltender Hugo Alnefelt.

Nikita Kucherov, Andrei Vassilevskiy Win NHLs Top Awards

Jun 20, 2019 1:09 AM

Nikita Kucherov gratefully accepted the Hart Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award on Wednesday night in recognition of his spectacular 128-point regular season playing for Tampa Bay.

Kucherov won the NHL's highest honors Wednesday night, receiving the Hart as the league MVP and the Lindsay Award as the best player according to a vote of his fellow pros.

The Russian right wing also formally picked up the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's top scorer at the hockey world's annual Vegas ceremony at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

"It's a huge night for me and my family,'' said Kucherov, who turned 26 on Monday. "But the main thing is Stanley Cup. We want to make sure we work harder than we thought we did [last season]. All these individual [awards], it's obviously nice, but the main thing is Stanley Cup for me.''

Andrei Vasilevskiy, Kucherov's Russian teammate, won his first Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goalie in another bittersweet recognition for the Lightning.

Las Vegas Picks Lightning To Win 2020 Stanley Cup

Jun 12, 2019 11:43 PM

Oddsmakers are not allowing a historic payout and overall financial loss to influence their bookmaking protocol.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are the favorites with 5-1 odds, fresh off capturing the Presidents' Trophy with the league's best regular-season record, though they were upset in the first round.

"There's no reason to think they're not going to be a buzzsaw again," Davis said. "They have a top-three goalie. All lines can score. They have to be the favorite and they have to be a sizable favorite."

Vegas (9-1), St. Louis (10-1), the Boston Bruins (12-1) and Toronto Maple Leafs (12-1) are next in line. The Ottawa Senators (400-1), Los Angeles Kings (150-1) and Detroit Red Wings (100-1) represent the long shots with triple-digit odds.

Cooper: Lightning Victims Of Their Own Success

Apr 17, 2019 4:01 PM

Here's the spin the Lightning had after Tuesday night's stunning 7-3 defeat in Game 4 of the first round: They were victims of their own success.

"When you have the amount of points we had, it's a blessing and a curse, in a way. You don't play any meaningful hockey for a long time. Then all of a sudden, you have to ramp it up. It's not an excuse. It's reality," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said after Game 4. "That's how it goes: You have a historic regular season, and we had a historic playoff."

Indeed, the Lightning made history in the 2019 playoffs -- just not the kind any coach would want. For the first time in league history, a team with the most points in the regular season failed to win a game in an opening-round, seven-game series.

The Lightning have signed head coach Jon Cooper to a multi-year contract extension today, vice president and general manager Julien BriseBois announced. Cooper was named the eighth head coach in franchise history on March 25, 2013 (six years ago yesterday) and is currently the NHL’s longest tenured coach.
