John Tavares Pleased With Extension Talks With Islanders

Aug 17, 2017 11:32 AM

John Tavares is pleased with the state of negotiations with the New York Islanders as he enters the final season of his contract.

Tavares wasn't willing to discuss the talks he's had with Islanders general manager Garth Snow and coach Doug Weight, but it appears the dialogue has been positive.

Tavares was the No. 1 pick in 2009.

Tavares signed a six-year contract with an average annual value of $5.5 million in 2011.

"For me there's really no rush," Tavares told the newspaper. "I'm trying to determine things, let the process run its course, keep the lines of communication open, keep it all internal and it's been good so far. … In terms of signing a new contract, there's a lot that goes into it. To really dive into all the details, get into all the conversations I've had with Garth, the team and Doug, I don't think it's productive to the situation and the negotiating. I prefer to keep it all internal. That's the best way to keep it all open, honest and healthy."

Scott Gomez Hired By Islanders As Assistant Coach

May 31, 2017 12:36 PM

Scott Gomez has joined the New York Islanders as an assistant coach.

Gomez retired from the NHL following the 15-16 season.

"Scott brings an immense amount of hockey knowledge to our coaching staff," Doug Weight said in a statement. "His offensive instincts, expertise on the power-play and the way he could control the game with his skating and smarts, are all key elements that we want implemented into our group. He played in the league as recently as the 2015-16 season so he can relate to today's NHL player in an effort to bring out the best in each member of the team."

Gomez was a two-time All-Star.

Isles Looking At Belmont Park, Willets Point For New Arena

Apr 22, 2017 1:24 AM

The Islanders are looking at Belmont Park as the site for their new hockey arena and plan to submit a bid to the state of New York, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said Friday.

Bettman also mentioned the land next to the Mets' Citi Field in Willets Point as a possible spot for the team, while noting that the team's former home, a renovated Nassau Coliseum is "not a long-term option."

"Yes, there is an RFP [request for proposal] for Belmont and I know they are going to participate in that," Bettman told a group from the The Associated Press Sports Editors in New York, according to Newsday. "I believe that everyone thinks there is a terrific opportunity there, if not at Willets Point, to create a more hockey friendly environment for the Islanders, which is something [Islanders co-owner] Scott [Malkin] is committed to do."
