Mike Green Suffering From Fatigue

The Detroit Red Wings will be without top defenseman Mike Green for the start of the regular season as he deals with a virus that has led to ongoing fatigue.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland told the Detroit Free Press that Green "hasn't had a lot of energy," which led to him getting blood work done and then a follow-up appointment with a doctor.

Henrik Zetterberg will retire from the NHL due to a back injury.

Zetterberg had been holding out hope that he would be able to play again. Last month, he described a deteriorating condition that included nerve pain in his legs and disk-related issues.

Zetterberg has three years remaining on his contract, with an annual cap hit of $6.083 million.

Chelios spent a decade with the Red Wings as a player from 1999-2009, and he also has been an adviser for the team. His Hall of Fame career as a defenseman started in Montreal before he spent eight years with the Blackhawks.

Chris Chelios Decides To Leave Red Wings

Chris Chelios is leaving the Detroit Red Wings to return to his hometown of Chicago.

Chelios spent a decade with the Red Wings as a player from 1999-2009, and he also has been an adviser for the team. His Hall of Fame career as a defenseman started in Montreal before he spent eight years with the Blackhawks.

"For me, this is an opportunity to move back to Chicago to be closer to family, and in particular my mother,'' Chelios said Thursday. "I began to seriously consider moving home last February after the passing of my father. Now that my children have all graduated, it seems like the ideal time for my wife, Tracee, and I to make the move.''
