Jordan Martinook Out Six To Eight Weeks After Core Muscle Surgery

Carolina Hurricanes winger Jordan Martinook will undergo a core muscle surgery for the second time this year, general manager Don Waddell announced Thursday.

The latest procedure was set for Friday. Martinook is expected to miss six to eight weeks to recover.

Lee Stempniak Retires After 14 NHL Seasons

Lee Stempniak has retired from the NHL after playing for 10 teams in 14 seasons.

The 36-year-old winger announced his decision Tuesday through the players' union. He says he is "extremely grateful to have lived my dream every day throughout my career."

The defending Stanley Cup champions made a big move ahead of the 2019-20 season, trading for Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk, and subsequently signing him to a seven-year, $45.5 million contract extension.

Hurricanes Sign Jake Gardiner To Four-Year Deal

The Hurricanes have signed defenseman Jake Gardiner to a four-year contract.

Under terms of the deal announced Friday by Carolina GM Don Waddell, Gardiner will make an average of $4.05 million each season.

"He's a great player. He's a great skater," Carolina defenseman Jaccob Slavin said. "He's really solid at running the power play. That's a great addition for our team. I think our blue line definitely just got stronger."

Justin Williams Stepping Away From The Game

Hurricanes captain Justin Williams says he is taking a break from the NHL to start this season.

With the start of training camp looming later this month, the 37-year-old forward said Monday that he will "step away" from the sport.

"This is the first time in my life that I've felt unsure of my aspirations with regards to hockey," Williams said in a statement released by the team. "For as long as I can remember, my whole offseason until this point has been hockey and doing what was necessary to prepare for the upcoming season.

"Because of my current indecision, and without the type of mental and physical commitment that I'm accustomed to having, I've decided to step away from the game," he added.

Cam Ward Signs One-Day Deal To Retire With Hurricanes

Goalie Cam Ward returned to the Carolina Hurricanes on a one-day contract Wednesday, and then he called it a career.

Ward, 35, retired from the NHL after a 14-year run that saw him lead the franchise to its only Stanley Cup championship in 2006. He was the first rookie goalie to accomplish that feat since Patrick Roy of the Montreal Canadiens in 1986, and he became the first rookie to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP since goalie Ron Hextall of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1987.

Waddell is both the team's president and general manager.

The 60-year-old had been mentioned as a candidate for the Minnesota Wild's GM vacancy. He has been with the organization since 2014.

The Montreal Canadiens have tendered an offer sheet to Carolina Hurricanes restricted free-agent center Sebastian Aho worth five years and $42.27 million.

Aho has signed the offer sheet, so the Hurricanes will have one week to match the offer or let their 21-year-old leading scorer slip away to Montreal. If they let him leave, the Hurricanes would receive a first, second and third-round pick in the 2020 NHL draft.
