Canes, Brett Pesce Agree To Six-Year Extension

Defenseman Brett Pesce has turned his breakout season into a new contract.

The Hurricanes announced on Tuesday that the 22-year-old has agreed to a six-year extension that pays $4.025 million per season. The deal starts in the 2018-19 season.

Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos Jr. says he wants to sell his team for about $500 million.

Karmanos told The News & Observer of Raleigh on Tuesday that he and an ownership group led by former Texas Rangers CEO Chuck Greenberg have agreed to a term sheet but do not have a purchase agreement.

Hurricanes spokesman Mike Sundheim said in a statement that Karmanos is deciding whether to accept an offer for the franchise or remain the owner, but he declined to say who made the offer.

Canes Acquire Marcus Kruger From Golden Knights

The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired Marcus Kruger from the Vegas Golden Knights, the forward's second trade in three days.

In the deal announced Tuesday, the Golden Knights picked up Carolina's fifth-round pick in the 2018 draft. Chicago traded Kruger to Vegas on Sunday for undisclosed future considerations.

Flames Acquire Lack, Murphy From Canes

The Calgary Flames acquired goalie Eddie Lack and defenseman Ryan Murphy from the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night.

Calgary also received a seventh-round pick in the 2019 draft, and sent defenseman Keegan Kanzig and a 2019 sixth-round draft pick to Carolina. The Hurricanes will pick up half of Lack's $3 million deal next season, the last on his contract.

Bryan Bickell To Retire From NHL

Hurricanes forward Bryan Bickell, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in November, announced Saturday night that he will retire after this season.

That capped an emotional day for Bickell, who made the decision to walk away from the game hours after being surprised by teammates, coaches and stuff at a Walk MS benefit event Saturday morning.

Hurricanes right wing Sebastian Aho, Wild center Mikael Granlund and Kings goaltender Peter Budaj have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Feb. 5.

FIRST STAR – SEBASTIAN AHO, RW, HURRICANES Aho tied for the League lead with four goals (4-1—5) including two game-winning tallies as the Hurricanes (24-20-7, 55 points) won all three of their games. 

SECOND STAR – MIKAEL GRANLUND, C, WILD Granlund finished the week tied for first in points with 3-3—6 as the Western Conference-leading Wild (34-12-5, 73 points) won two of three contests. 

THIRD STAR – PETER BUDAJ, G, KINGS Budaj went 3-1-0 with a 1.62 goals-against average, .930 save percentage and two shutouts as the Kings, who hold the first Wild Card spot in the Western Conference, improved to 27-22-4 (58 points).
