Brian Gionta Named USA Team Captain

Jan 3, 2018 2:00 AM

Although the NHL prohibited its players from participating in the 2018 Winter Olympic men's hockey tournament, a number of familiar NHL names were announced for Team USA at the Winter Classic at Citi Field on Monday.

Former Canadiens and Sabres winger Brian Gionta, a 2006 U.S. Olympian, was named the team's captain. Many of his former NHL teammates were not allowed to appear on Olympic rosters after a financial dispute between the league and the International Olympic Committee resulted in an announcement in April that the NHL would not send players to the Winter Games for the first time since 1998.

Sabres Lock Up Jack Eichel With Eight-Year, $80M Deal

Oct 4, 2017 2:26 AM

Motivated to be better, Sabres center Jack Eichel called his first two NHL seasons as being "mediocre" upon arriving at training camp last month.

There's nothing substandard about the eight-year, $80 million contract extension the 20-year-old center agreed to Tuesday.

The deal, which carries an average annual value of $10 million, was reached two days before the Sabres open the season by hosting the Canadiens.

Jack Eichel, Sabres Discussing Contract Extension

Aug 19, 2017 6:38 PM

Jack Eichel continues to negotiate what he hopes will be a long-term contract with the Buffalo Sabres, he told the Lowell Sun.

"We're in the midst of it. It's between my agent and [general manager Jason] Botterill," the 20-year-old said. "I'm just going to work hard this summer. All of that tends to take care of itself. Obviously the contract is important. But for me it's all about the play."

Eichel and the Sabres reportedly are negotiating an eight-year extension that would begin next season. This will be the final season of his three-year, entry-level contract, which has an NHL salary cap charge of $925,000.
