Sabres Hire John Roth As COO

The NHL's Buffalo Sabres and Pegula Sports & Entertainment have hired John Roth as chief operating officer.

Co-owner Terry Pegula announced Roth's appointment Tuesday. Wife Kim Pegula remains president of the Sabres and the NFL's Buffalo Bills, while still recovering from what her family described as health issues that led to her being hospitalized in June.

Kris Letang Returns To Lineup As Penguins Win Again

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang returned to the lineup Saturday night, just 12 days after suffering the second stroke of his career Nov. 28.

Saying "it means the world to our team," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan drew Letang back in against the Buffalo Sabres after a five-game absence. Earlier in the day, he was deemed a game-time decision, but ultimately skated in 25 shifts during the Penguins' 3-1 home victory, covering 22:14 time on the ice. He was his traditional active self, finishing with seven hits, three blocked shots and two minutes in penalties.

Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson tied a franchise record with five goals against the host Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night.

Thompson tied the mark at 16:07 of the second period, which put the Sabres up 7-2 on their way to a 9-4 win. It was his 21st goal of the season. He became the second Buffalo player with five goals in a game, joining Dave Andreychuk, who accomplished the feat against the Boston Bruins on Feb. 6, 1986.

The Buffalo Sabres signed coach Don Granato to a two-year contract extension Wednesday, rewarding him for the team's improvement in his first full season.

Granato had two years left on his existing contract and is now locked up through the 2025-26 season. He will make just under $2 million in each season of the extension, not including bonuses, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press.

Though his rebuilding job is far from complete, Buffalo Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams signed a contract extension on Wednesday, an indication that ownership believes he has the franchise pointed in the right direction.

Terms of the extension were not revealed. Adams, who's in his third season as GM, signed the deal as players reported for the start of training camp.

Ryan Miller, who has won more games than any United States-born goalie in NHL history, is among five people elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2022, USA Hockey announced Thursday.

Miller went 391-289-87 with one tie, a 2.64 goals-against average, .914 save percentage and 44 shutouts in 796 games (772 starts) in 18 NHL seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks and Anaheim Ducks. He was 28-27 with a 2.52 GAA, .913 save percentage and three shutouts in 57 Stanley Cup Playoff games (55 starts).

The Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday ensured a key piece of their rebuilding effort will stick around, signing forward Tage Thompson to a seven-year contract extension worth $50 million.

The contract, which begins with the 2023-24 season, rewards Thompson, 24, five months after a career season ended. He led the Sabres with 38 goals and 68 points while playing 78 games, and all of those totals were career highs.

Andrej Sekera announced his retirement on Tuesday after almost two decades in the NHL.

The Slovak defenseman played the past 15 full seasons since making his debut in 2006. Sekera played 888 regular-season and playoff games for the Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars.
