The Red Wings signed forward Sam Gagner to a one-year contract extension Saturday.

The Red Wings acquired Gagner on Feb. 24 in a trade with Edmonton. He played six games for Detroit.

The Montreal Canadiens have signed defenseman Jeff Petry to a four-year, $25 million contract extension, general manager Marc Bergevin announced Saturday.

The new deal, which runs through the 2024-25 season, comes after Petry posted 11 goals and 29 assists for his third straight 40-point season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has hired Paul MacLean as an assistant coach.

"Over nearly two decades as an NHL coach, Paul has filled every role on a coaching staff, winning a Stanley Cup and Jack Adams trophy along the way,” said Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe. “Adding someone of Paul's expertise and character to advise and assist our staff is something that we felt was very important as we seek to make tangible steps next season."

MacLean spent the 2019-20 season as an assistant coach with the Columbus Blue Jackets after being hired on November 21, 2019. He previously served as the head coach of the Ottawa Senators from 2011-15, leading the Senators to a 114-90-35 record and a pair of playoff appearances. He won the Jack Adams Award while coaching Ottawa in 2012-13 after being a finalist for the honour in 2011-12. MacLean served two stints as an assistant coach for the Anaheim Ducks spanning 2002-04 and 2015-17 and was an assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings from 2005-11. He has been an assistant coach in the postseason on 11 occasions and has made three appearances in the Stanley Cup finals (2003, 2008, 2009), winning the Stanley Cup in 2008.

The Sabres signed right winger Curtis Lazar to a two-year, $1.6 million contract Thursday.

Lazar was a restricted free agent who split the 2019-20 season between the NHL and the American Hockey League. He had five goals and five assists in 38 games with the Sabres.

The Nashville Predators have signed forward Yakov Trenin to a two-year contract worth $1.45 million.

The Predators announced the deal Thursday. Trenin will be paid $700,000 for the 2020-21 season and $750,000 for 2021-22.

The San Jose Sharks saw enough from Bob Boughner last season to make him the ninth head coach in franchise history.

Boughner was officially elevated form interim status on Tuesday, after having coached the team for 37 games in the 2019-20 season after the firing of head coach Peter DeBoer. Boughner, who had been an assistant coach for San Jose, went 14-20-3 before the regular-season was paused on March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jared McCann is sticking with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The team announced Friday it has re-signed the forward to a two-year contract that runs through the 2021-22 season. The deal carries an average annual value of $2.94 million.

The Maple Leafs announced today that the club has hired Manny Malhotra as an assistant coach. The 40-year-old replaces former assistant Paul McFarland who rejoined the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL.

“I’m very grateful to the Canucks organization for the opportunity given to me to start my coaching career. It was truly a great experience to learn from Travis Green and the rest of his staff,” said Malhotra. “I’m now very excited for this opportunity with the Leafs moving forward — to be with Sheldon, his staff and this young, talented team.”

The Arizona Coyotes named Bill Armstrong their new general manager on Thursday.

Armstrong, 50, has been the St. Louis Blues' assistant GM/director of amateur scouting the past two seasons.

He replaces John Chayka, who resigned as GM on the eve of the Stanley Cup playoffs, leading the team to say he "quit" and that it was "disappointed in his actions and his timing."

Jim Montgomery is getting a second chance to coach in the NHL after being hired by the St. Louis Blues as an assistant coach less than a year since he was fired by the Dallas Stars for unprofessional conduct.

Montgomery was fired in December, 32 games into his second season as Stars coach, for what general manager Jim Nill said was behavior inconsistent with "core values and beliefs of the Dallas Stars and the National Hockey League." The 51-year-old on Wednesday said he has been sober for over nine months now.
