Defenseman Michal Kempny has re-signed with the Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals for $10 million over four years, it was announced Friday.

The Capitals found the successor to Stanley Cup-winning coach Barry Trotz on their own bench. Associate coach Todd Reirden was named the 18th head coach in franchise history Friday.

Reirden, 47, is a highly regarded coach who specialized in working with the team's defensemen. He joined the Capitals in 2014, having previously spent four seasons with the Penguins, winning the Stanley Cup with them in 2009.

The Colorado Avalanche signed goaltender Philipp Grubauer to a three-year contract worth $10 million and put defenseman Brooks Orpik on buyout waivers the day after acquiring them from the Washington Capitals, according to multiple reports.

The team announced Grubauer's signing, and multiple reports say the deal is worth $10 million.

Ilya Kovalchuk has agreed to a three-year deal with the Los Angeles Kings, the team announced Saturday.

The average annual value of the contract is $6.25 million, a source told ESPN.

"We are excited to add Ilya to the LA Kings organization," vice president and general manager Rob Blake said in a statement. "He gives us an added element of skill and scoring along with a desire to win. We will withhold further comment until July 1."

The Detroit Red Wings have hired Dan Bylsma as an assistant coach, the team announced Firday.

The 47-year-old Bylsma worked as an assistant alongside Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill at this year's world championship in Denmark, helping the United States to a bronze medal.

When Barry Trotz left the Capitals fresh off winning the Stanley Cup, the Islanders couldn't move fast enough to talk to him.

On Thursday, the Islanders hired Trotz and hope to benefit from the first Stanley Cup-winning coach leaving his team in a contract dispute in 24 years.

"It's certainly not something that you see every day,'' Lamoriello said Thursday after the NHL general managers meeting. "But I think we're the fortunate recipient of it that we were able to have him come in our organization.''

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has signed defenceman Connor Carrick to a one-year contract worth $1.3 million.

Carrick, 24, collected a single-season career-high 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in 47 games with the Maple Leafs over the course of the 2017-18 season. In 167 career NHL games with the Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals, the Orland Park, Illinois native has registered nine goals and 21 assists. Carrick was acquired by Toronto in a trade with Washington on February 28, 2016. He was originally selected in the fifth round (137^th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft.

Todd Nelson, who spent the last three seasons as head coach for Grand Rapids in the American Hockey League, was named a Stars assistant coach on Thursday.
