Metro Wins NHL All-Star Game, Crosby Named MVP

Sidney Crosby had two goals and three assists, and Henrik Lundqvist pitched a first-half shutout to lead the Metropolitan Division to a 10-5 victory over the Central Division in the championship round of the NHL All-Star Game Saturday night.

Selected the MVP, Crosby finished the night with four goals and four assists in two games on the same ice where he won the Conn Smythe Trophy and Stanley Cup three years ago for Pittsburgh.

Bettman: Seattle To Host NHL Draft, An All-Star Game

On his first trip to Seattle since the city was granted the NHL's 32nd franchise, Commissioner Gary Bettman announced a couple more rewards for the future franchise's investment.

Bettman said the league has promised Seattle it will host All-Star weekend within its first seven seasons, with the team slated to begin play in 2021-22. Bettman also says Seattle will host the NHL draft, and that event will likely be awarded before the All-Star Game arrives.

Maurice, Reirden, Cooper, Peters Named All-Star Game Coaches

The four coaches for this month's NHL All-Star Game will be Paul Maurice of Winnipeg, Todd Reirden of Washington, Jon Cooper of Tampa Bay and Bill Peters of Calgary.

Each of the teams is a division leader -- Winnipeg (Central), Washington (Metropolitan), Tampa Bay (Atlantic) and Calgary (Pacific).

The NHL All-Star Weekend is Jan. 25-26 in San Jose, California.

Ovechkin To Skip All-Star Game To Rest For Second Half

Alex Ovechkin, who was named the captain of the Metropolitan Division team for the All-Star Game on Jan. 26, has informed the NHL that he will skip the festivities to rest for the second half of the season.

The Capitals captain leads the league with 29 goals.

"My body needs a rest," he said after practice on Wednesday.

Deciding to skip the game means that Ovechkin will have to also sit out the game before or game after the contest, per NHL rules.
