Jackets' Modin, Pahlsson Named To Swedish Olympic Team

Blue Jackets forwards Fredrik Modin and Samuel Pahlsson have been named to the Swedish Olympic hockey team that will compete at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, the team announced today. Both players are holdovers from the squad that captured the gold medal at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin, Italy.

Brodeur Sets NHL Games Record

Martin Brodeur set a NHL record for games played by a goalie and helped make the milestone a win with 27 saves and an assist, leading the Devils to a 4-2 victory over the Senators on Friday night, according to an Associated Press report. Brodeur passed Patrick Roy with his 1,030th appearance. Roy, who played for Montreal and Colorado, played 18 seasons. Brodeur is in his 16th season, all with New Jersey.

Martin Brodeur tied Patrick Roy?s NHL record for regular-season appearances by a goalie, and Patrik Elias scored the winner with 2:36 left in the Devils? 2-1 win over the Canadiens on Wednesday night, as reported by the Associated Press. Brodeur played his 1,029th game, all with New Jersey in his 16-year career. Roy played for Montreal and Colorado in his 18-year career.

Goaltender Jonathan Quick of the Kings, left wing Daniel Sedin of the Canucks and goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov of the Coyotes have been named the NHL 'Three Stars' for the week ending Dec. 13. FIRST STAR -- JONATHAN QUICK, G, KINGS Quick posted a 3-0-0 record with a 1.58 goals-against average and .941 save percentage, helping the Kings (21-10-3) leap to first place in the Western Conference. SECOND STAR -- DANIEL SEDIN, LW, CANUCKS Sedin led the NHL in goals (five) and points (seven) last week, recording multiple points in each outing as the Canucks (18-14-0) posted two victories in three games. THIRD STAR -- ILYA BRYZGALOV, G, COYOTES Bryzgalov posted a 2-0-1 record with a 0.97 goals-against average, .968 save percentage and one shutout as the Coyotes improved to 19-11-2.

Veteran Darren McCarty Officially Retires

Darren McCarty, a veteran of 15 NHL seasons who won four Stanley Cups with the Red Wings, officially announced his retirement Monday, as reported by the Associated Press. The 37-year-old McCarty spent 13 seasons with the Red Wings. He appeared in 758 games overall, recording 127 goals, 288 points and 1,477 penalty minutes. He also helped the Red Wings hoist the Cup in 1998, 2002 and ?08.
