Lindros, Broten Discuss Concussions

Oct 11, 2014 11:12 AM

Eric Lindros, who played for both the Flyers and Rangers, battled several concussions throughout his career and considers himself fortunate that he has not been saddled with any serious long-term issues. "I feel pretty lucky based on my [history] and a bunch of guys going through some tough times," he said. "I feel quite lucky and very healthy." Former Rangers linemates Darren Turcotte and Paul Broten acknowledged the change in culture regarding head injuries, incidents that are becoming all too common among some of the league's brightest stars. "Obviously, times have changed," said Broten, who played for the Rangers from 1989 to 1993. "Now they're really concentrating on them a lot more. Back in the day it was more just, 'Take a couple minutes. You just got your bell rung and you'll be fine.' Now they're looking into it more seriously and they should. I think it's a good thing, with all the deaths of a lot of the fighters and some of the players who aren't playing. It's obvious it's a serious question."

Alfredsson's 400th Goal Lifts Senators

Sep 12, 2014 9:06 AM

Daniel Alfredsson was mobbed by his teammates and received a standing ovation from Ottawa's fans after he delivered an unforgettable 400th career goal. Alfredsson reached the milestone at 3:31 of overtime to cap Ottawa's come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Flames on Friday night. "To be able to do this at home and in overtime, when everybody's still in the building and being a big goal for us, it's almost too good to be true," said the 39-year-old Swedish right wing.

Canucks Fan Says Woman Attacked Her

May 9, 2014 5:57 PM

San Jose police are investigating a 16-year-old girl's claim that she was assaulted during a Sharks game at HP Pavilion while wearing the opposing team's jersey. Maggie Herger told the San Jose Mercury News that a drunken Sharks fan hit her on the head in the second period during Wednesday's game between the Sharks and Canucks. Herger said she suffered a concussion and was taken away in an ambulance, at which point a passing Sharks fan shouted for her to "suck it up." "I just wanted to cry," Herger said Thursday. "Who does that?" But according to the Sharks, the accused fan, a middle-aged woman, told police and arena staff the contact was accidental and occurred during the celebration of a Sharks goal.

Canadiens Get First Win Under Cunneyworth

Sep 26, 2014 11:38 AM

Mike Cammalleri, Tomas Plekanec, Louis Leblanc, P.K. Subban and Erik Cole each had a goal and an assist as Montreal ended a five-game losing streak with a 6-2 win over Ottawa on Tuesday night. Raphael Diaz had three assists and Lars Eller scored his second short-handed goal of the season for the Canadiens, who gave interim coach Randy Cunneyworth his first NHL win in five tries. "He's been doing a good job for us and we haven't been playing up to par so it was really good to be able to get that one for him," said goalie Carey Price, who stopped 33 shots. Cunneyworth was Ottawa's captain when the modern Senators claimed their first playoff spot in 1997. "I would have taken it a couple of games earlier but obviously a win's a win, and it's the start of hopefully many more," said Cunneyworth.

Cam Ward Scores Empty-Net Goal

May 17, 2014 3:49 AM

Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward scored an empty-net goal on Monday night against the Devils, the first of his career. Ward made 23 saves and was credited with a bizarre empty-net goal in Carolina's 4-2 win. "It would have been a lot cooler if I had shot the puck or did something like that," Ward said. The Devils were scrambling near Ward and trying to tie the game, but Ilya Kovalchuk's errant pass for Adam Henrique from the end line wound up going the length of the ice and into an empty net with 29.4 seconds left. "I don't know how to explain it. I should make better decisions that that, definitely," Kovalchuk said. "We find a way to make the game interesting and we were working hard, but a bad decision by me cost us the game." Officials initially awarded the goal to Sutter before a postgame review determined he never touched the puck. "It was Wardo's. As soon as it went in, I think we all knew it was his," Sutter said. "And then the ref kind of came up to me and asked what happened. He asked who touched it last, and it was (Ward)."
