The New Jersey Devils have placed veteran goaltender Cory Schneider on unconditional waivers for the purpose of buying out the final two years of his contract.

The Devils announced the move on Thursday, the day before the start of the NHL's free agency period.

The Detroit Red Wings placed forward Justin Abdelkader on unconditional waivers Tuesday for the purpose of buying out his contract. 

Abdelkader had three years remaining on his contract at a salary cap hit of $4.25 million. His buyout will span six years for Detroit.

The Penguins are buying out Jack Johnson's contract, the team announced Monday.

Pittsburgh put the 33-year-old defenseman on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout.

Michael Grabner was placed on waivers by the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday for the purpose of buying out his contract.

The forward, who turns 33 on Monday, scored 11 points (eight goals, three assists) in 46 games this season. He scored three goals in nine games during the postseason, helping the Coyotes defeat the Nashville Predators in the Stanley Cup Qualifiers before losing to the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference First Round.
