The Panthers have claimed Antti Niemi off waivers to shore up their goaltending position, with starter Roberto Luongo sidelined because of an injury to his right hand.

Niemi was claimed on Tuesday, a day after being waived by the Penguins. He allowed 16 goals in losing three games for the Penguins. Niemi is now on his third team in four months and fourth since winning the 2010 Stanley Cup with Chicago.

A person with direct knowledge of the situation says defenseman Mark Streit will not report to the minors after clearing waivers and will spend the next few days weighing his options.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because talks between Streit and the Montreal Canadiens have been private.

Goaltender Malcolm Subban was claimed off waivers by the Golden Knights, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said Tuesday.

The Bruins waited until Monday to waive the 23-year-old, with most teams already set in goal, hoping to sneak him to their Providence affiliate, but the former first-round pick was claimed by Golden Knights general manager George McPhee.

"I had my fingers crossed that it wasn't gonna happen," Sweeney said, according to the Boston Herald.
