Seattle Begins Work On New Arena

Dec 11, 2018 2:45 AM

Wednesday's celebration outside the building that Seattle's new NHL team will eventually call home came with all the formality of a groundbreaking event, complete with the principals taking turns giving remarks and ceremonially shoveling dirt.

The NHL will add a franchise in Seattle, the league announced Tuesday after a unanimous vote by the board of governors.

The NHL's 32nd franchise will enter the league for the 2021-22 season as a member of the Pacific Division. That will trigger a realignment that will send the Arizona Coyotes to the Central Division.

NHL To Deal With Uncertain Situations At Winter Meetings

Dec 8, 2018 2:25 PM

Things are going well enough that the NHL is ready to expand to Seattle and the salary cap keeps going up.

But the league is still dealing with a few uncertain situations on the eve of what should be a slam-dunk expansion vote to bring Seattle into the fold.

The Ottawa Senators' downtown-arena project is in danger of falling apart, and Arizona Coyotes owner Andrew Barroway is looking for a partner as he tries to secure a long-term home in the desert. Meanwhile, the league would like to begin making plans for a 2020 World Cup of Hockey but has no guarantee of labor peace that would allow such a tournament to take place.
