The Florida Panthers are Presidents' Trophy winners for the first time in franchise history, finishing the regular season with 122 points.

Florida claimed the NHL's top spot in the standings on Thursday after defeating Ottawa 4-0 and seeing Colorado lose to Nashville 5-4 in a shootout.

This was just the second season where Florida had ever eclipsed 100 points, following a 103-point effort in 2015-16.

Joe Biden joked that Steven Stamkos was getting old after playing in the National Hockey League for 14 seasons, praised the Tampa Bay Lightning's vaccine efforts and otherwise avoided politics while honoring the team for winning the Stanley Cup in each of the past two seasons.

Matthew Tkachuk scored his 40th goal, Christopher Tanev scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period, and the Flames beat the Stars 4-2 on Thursday night to win the Pacific Division title.

The Flames won their division for the eighth time in franchise history but just the third in the last 27 years.

"The team deserves it," coach Darryl Sutter said. "They've been the most consistent team in the division. They deserve to win the division."

The Florida Panthers are champions of the NHL's Atlantic Division. 

Aleksander Barkov scored his 38th goal of the season, and the Panthers tied a franchise record with their 12th straight win, beating the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 on Thursday night.

That, combined with Tampa Bay's 8-1 win over Toronto later Thursday, locked up the Atlantic title and home-ice advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs for the Panthers.

Ben Meyers scored in his NHL debut, and the Colorado Avalanche clinched the top seed in the Western Conference with a 7-4 win against the Carolina Hurricanes at Ball Arena on Saturday.

A finalist for the 2022 Hobey Baker Award as the top men's player in NCAA ice hockey, Meyers signed with Colorado as a free agent on Wednesday after completing his junior season at the University of Minnesota.

Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk each had two goals and two assists and the Calgary Flames routed the Arizona Coyotes 9-1 on Saturday night after they clinched a playoff spot before the game started.

Edmonton locked Pacific Division-leading Calgary into the postseason by beating Vegas 4-0 earlier in the day.

The St. Louis Blues clinched a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs when they won their eighth straight game, 6-5 in overtime against the Minnesota Wild at Enterprise Center on Saturday.

Brayden Schenn scored 56 seconds into overtime after he took a pass in the high slot following a Pavel Buchnevich wraparound.

Jeremy Swayman rebounded from a rough stretch with 23 saves and the Boston Bruins clinched a playoff spot by holding off the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 on Saturday to halt a season-high three-game losing streak.

Trent Frederic and Erik Haula scored first-period goals for Boston, which went on the skid after winning 17 of 21.

Jake Guentzel scored twice, Sidney Crosby also had a goal and the Penguins earned a playoff berth for the 16th straight season with a 6-3 victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday night.

Guentzel scored his 36th and 37th goals and Crosby his 29th as the Penguins extended the longest active postseason streak among teams in major North American professional sports.

The Florida Panthers became the first team to clinch a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 5-3 win against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center on Sunday.

"They should be proud of themselves," Florida coach Andrew Brunette said. "I think that's the No. 1 goal heading into the season, and we have one of them. Lots of hockey left, but let's enjoy the moment. It's been an interesting 70 games, and they deserve every ounce of credit they are getting."
