The Detroit Red Wings will not renew the contract of Jeff Blashill, who just completed his seventh season as head coach.

Detroit finished with a 32-40-10 record (.451 points percentage) and were 26 points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, missing the playoffs for the sixth straight season.

The team also announced it would not bring back assistant coach Doug Houda and goaltending coach Jeff Salajko. Assistant coach Alex Tanguay remains with the Red Wings.

Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Brown will retire after this season, his 18th with the club.

He made the announcement Thursday ahead of the Kings' regular-season finale. Los Angeles will face Edmonton in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.

The Florida Panthers are Presidents' Trophy winners for the first time in franchise history, finishing the regular season with 122 points.

Florida claimed the NHL's top spot in the standings on Thursday after defeating Ottawa 4-0 and seeing Colorado lose to Nashville 5-4 in a shootout.

This was just the second season where Florida had ever eclipsed 100 points, following a 103-point effort in 2015-16.

The Chicago Blackhawks are hiring Jeff Greenberg, formerly with the Chicago Cubs, as their new associate general manager.

General manager Kyle Davidson confirmed the news to ESPN on Thursday, saying Greenberg will "help carry the Blackhawks into the next generation."

"It's the direction I always wanted to go," Davidson told ESPN, "To bring in that outside influence and expertise we don't have in-house, and someone that can bring the unique perspective of how a front office can be run. I'm excited to get his influence into our group. I think he can help push us into the area a lot of other sports are in right now, streamlining, modernizing and adding sophistication to the decision-making process, that hockey isn't necessarily at the level of, in my opinion."

It's official: Vegas will miss the NHL postseason for the first time in franchise history.

The Golden Knights' second-half collapse to this season left them with wafer-thin playoff hopes, and those were snuffed out entirely on Wednesday in a 4-3 shootout loss to host Chicago.

Penguins CEO David Morehouse stepped down Wednesday, ending a 16-year run with the franchise that included three Stanley Cup titles.

Morehouse did not provide an explanation for his decision in a release. The Penguins changed ownership last fall when Fenway Sports Group bought the club from Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle.

"I'm confident that the Penguins' future is in good hands with Fenway Sports Group," Morehouse said in a statement.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed Dryden McKay, the Minnesota State goaltender who won this year's Hobey Baker Award as the NCAA's top player, and then accepted a six-month ban for an anti-doping rule violation.

McKay, 24, agreed to a two-year contract with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

There's much for the Capitals to evaluate after a tough loss late in the season and an injury that could cloud their entire playoff outlook.

Alex Ovechkin was injured early in the third period of a 4-3 shootout loss to the  Maple Leafs on Sunday night, crashing into the boards and getting ruled out with an upper-body injury. 

Ovechkin's uncertain status is the most alarming situation facing the Capitals with the playoffs beginning in just over a week.

Vegas Golden Knights goalie Robin Lehner is undergoing season-ending surgery for a lower-body injury, sources told ESPN on Friday.

Lehner suffered the injury in a March 8 loss to the Flyers in Philadelphia. He left the team's road trip to receive more testing after the initial injury and missed Vegas' next several games.
