Auston Matthews scored his NHL-leading 50th goal of the season and the Maple Leafs beat the Jets 7-3 on Thursday night.

Matthews scored Toronto's sixth goal of the game into an empty net with 2:06 left in regulation. He moved past Leon Draisaitl (49 goals) of idle Edmonton for the league goal lead and became the first Maple Leafs player to reach the milestone since Dave Andreychuk scored 53 in 1993-94.

Matthews joined Andreychuk, Rick Vaive (three times) and Gary Leeman as the only Maple Leafs players to reach the half-century goal mark.

Arizona Coyotes leading scorer Clayton Keller had surgery Wednesday night after fracturing his leg in a 5-2 win over the San Jose Sharks.

Keller is "doing well," the team announced, and is expected to be out four to six months.

The Minnesota Wild signed defenseman Alex Goligoski to a two-year, $4 million contract extension on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old Goligoski is in his first season with the Wild, his home-state club. He has two goals, 26 assists and a team-leading plus-34 rating in 58 games.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman downplayed the league's appetite for implementing a postseason salary cap, saying he doesn't consider teams' usage of long-term injury reserve a "front-burner issue."

"Nobody in that room [of NHL general managers] believes that it's being abused," Bettman said Tuesday as the league's annual spring general managers meetings wrapped up. "I think it's the perception. Nobody was sitting there saying, 'this is a terrible abuse, we have to fix it.' That hasn't been the case at all."

Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk has died from an illness, the team said Monday night.

He was 62.

The team announced Melnyk's death with a statement from his family that mentioned "an illness he faced with determination and courage.'' The statement did not explain what the illness was, and a team spokesman did not immediately respond to a message seeking additional details.

The pair led a discussion Monday with the NHL's 32 general managers at their annual meeting -- their first in-person gathering since March 2020 because of the pandemic -- as the league continues its attempt to push forward on the issues of safety, inclusion and respect in the aftermath of the investigation into the Chicago Blackhawks mishandling a player alleging a video coach sexually assaulted him in 2010.

Vegas Golden Knights center Brett Howden did not suffer a serious injury but will be out indefinitely after being stretchered off the ice in Thursday night's win over the Nashville Predators, head coach Peter DeBoer said Friday.

Howden was taken to a Las Vegas hospital after the incident but was at the Knights' practice facility Friday. He did not play in the Knights' 5-4 overtime win over the Blackhawks on Saturday.

"Sore, nothing broken but probably out for a little while," DeBoer said Friday. "Scary situation and thankfully about as good a result as you can ask for out of something like that. He's pretty banged up today."

Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Joonas Korpisalo will have hip surgery and will miss the remainder of the season.

The NHL team said the 27-year-old Korpisalo will need at least six months to recover.

"This is an injury that Joonas has been dealing with for some time, and it has now gotten to the point where surgery is the best option," general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said. "We are disappointed for him, as he has worked extremely hard to be able to play, but this is the best course of action."

The NHL announced on Wednesday that it was cancelling the trade that sent forward Evgenii Dadonov from the Vegas Golden Knights to the Anaheim Ducks because it violated his limited no-trade clause.

The Carolina Hurricanes acquired Columbus Blue Jackets forward Max Domi on Monday in a complicated three-way trade that also involved the Florida Panthers.

The Jackets traded Domi, 27, to the Panthers along with a 2022 sixth-round pick that was originally owned by the Toronto Maple Leafs. In exchange, the Panthers sent NCAA fifth-year senior defenseman Tyler Inamoto of Wisconsin to Columbus, which retained 50% of Domi's $5.3 million cap hit.
