Avs Activate Nathan MacKinnon Off IR

The Colorado Avalanche have activated star center Nathan MacKinnon off injured reserve ahead of Saturday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

MacKinnon has not played since Dec. 5 because of an upper-body injury that forced him out of a loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. He was placed on IR the following day.

The Avalanche said at the time that MacKinnon would miss about four weeks.

Blues Place Torey Krug On IR With Lower-Body Injury

St. Louis Blues defenseman Torey Krug was placed on injured reserve Tuesday with a lower-body injury and will be reevaluated in six weeks.

Krug, 31, has five goals and 12 assists in 31 games this season, his third with St. Louis. He will be a long-term IR exception to the salary cap.

Bruins Announce New Policies In Wake Of Mitchell Miller Signing

The Boston Bruins revealed findings and subsequent procedural changes on Thursday from an independent review conducted on their signing of Mitchell Miller.

That investigation, led by former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch of the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, parsed through thousands of documents related to Boston's signing of Miller on Nov. 4 before the club cut ties with him days later.

The Bruins' release detailed what new policies the club will adopt, while also stating that there was no misconduct by Boston's employees in initially vetting Miller.

Alex Ovechkin Now NHL's All-Time Leader In Shots On Goal

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin is now the NHL's all-time leader in shots on goal.

Ovechkin's shot with 11 minutes, 14 seconds remaining in the third period at the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night gave him 6,210 shots on goal in his career in 1,309 games. That topped the total of Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Ray Bourque, who had 6,209 in his 1,612-game NHL career.

Ovechkin increased his career total to 6,211 by game's end, with the Capitals winning 3-2 in overtime.

San Jose Sharks forward Tomas Hertl has been suspended two games for a high-stick penalty against the Calgary Flames' Elias Lindholm.

Hertl received a minor penalty for the infraction on Sunday night. The NHL's Department of Player Safety announced Monday that Hertl will miss two games without pay, his first suspension of his 10-year career.

He has two goals in 28 games with the Avalanche and Rangers this season.

The NHL has discussed expanding its regular season from 82 to 84 games in an effort to create more regional rivalry matchups, sources confirmed to ESPN.

The league has been considering alternatives to its current schedule after some teams complained about an imbalanced number of divisional games against rivals.

Currently, each team plays either three or four games against divisional opponents, for a total of 26 games; they play three games against nondivisional teams within their own conference, for a total of 24 games; and they play two games, home and away, against opponents from the other conference for a total of 32 games.
