Maple Leafs Sign Forward Rich Clune

The Maple Leafs announced Thursday that the team has signed forward Rich Clune to an NHL contract. Clune, who had previously signed an AHL contract with the Toronto Marlies this past off-season, will join the Maple Leafs today for practice.

Clune, 28, has collected five points (two goals, three assists) and 18 penalty minutes in eight games with the Toronto Marlies so far this season. Clune has played in 120 career NHL games with Los Angeles and Nashville, registering 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists). He has also skated in 345 career AHL games, collecting 97 points (34 goals, 63 assists).

Clune was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the 3rd round (71st overall) during the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

Slava Voynov To Resume Career After Serving Jail Time

Two-time Stanley Cup-winning defenseman Slava Voynov will resume his career with SKA St. Petersburg after serving time in jail on a domestic violence charge in the United States.

Voynov, a former defenseman with the Kings, was suspended for the final 76 games of the 2014-15 NHL season and returned to Russia after serving two months in jail, plus time in immigration custody.

In a brief statement, SKA says Voynov, 25, has signed a three-year contract.

Canucks End Canadiens Win Streak

The Vancouver Canucks beat Montreal 5-1 on Tuesday to hand the Canadiens their first loss of the season.

Montreal (9-1-0) had set an NHL record with nine straight regulation wins to start the season and was one victory from tying the 1993-94 Maple Leafs and the 2006-07 Sabres for the best start in league history, at 10-0.

Blues Invite Havlat, Zubrus To Try Out

The Blues, hard-hit by injuries, have invited veterans Martin Havlat and Dainius Zubrus to try out.

Both are former first-round draft picks and played for New Jersey last season.

The 34-year-old Havlat had 14 points in 40 games, and the 37-year-old Zubrus had 10 points in 74 games.

NHL Names Kuznetsov, Markov, Quick 'Three Stars'

Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov, Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov and Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Oct. 25.

FIRST STAR – EVGENY KUZNETSOV, C, CAPITALS

Kuznetsov paced the NHL with six assists and nine points – and also shared the League lead with a +5 rating – as the Capitals (6-1-0, 12 points) won all three of their games. He began the week with three assists, matching a career high, in a 6-2 victory over the Flames Oct. 20. 


SECOND STAR – ANDREI MARKOV, D, CANADIENS

Markov shared first among defensemen with 1-5—6 as the Canadiens (9-0-0, 18 points) won all three of their contests to extend the franchise’s best start in its 98-year NHL history. 


THIRD STAR – JONATHAN QUICK, G, KINGS

Quick posted a 2-0-0 record with a 1.00 goals-against average, .971 save percentage and one shutout as the Kings (5-3-0, 10 points) extended their winning streak to five games.

Predators Sign Mattias Ekholm To Six-Year, $22.5M Deal

Predators President of Hockey Operations/GM David Poile announced today that restricted free agent defenseman Mattias Ekholm has signed a six-year, $22.5 million contract that carries an average annual value of $3.75 million.

Ekholm, 25, has a goal and two assists in seven games in 2015-16, giving him 30 points (9g-21a) and 66 penalty minutes in 152 career games since the 2011-12 season. 

Nashville's seventh choice, 102nd overall (fourth round), in the 2009 Entry Draft, Ekholm has represented Sweden in the past two World Championships, helping the Tre Kronor to a bronze medal in 2014, being named one of the nation’s three best players after tying for second (with Predators teammate Roman Josi) among tournament defensemen in points (2g-5a-7pts), while leading all Swedish skaters in average ice time.

Canadiens Extend Streak To Nine Games

The Canadiens were outshot 52-27 by the Maple Leafs on Saturday night but Carey Price's stellar goaltending and three special teams goals lifted Montreal to a 5-3 victory that extended its season-opening winning streak to nine games.

The Canadiens are a victory away from tying the NHL record set by the Maple Leafs in 1993-94 and matched by Buffalo in 2006-07. Their next game is Tuesday at Vancouver.

"You have to give (the Leafs) credit, they came out hard," defenseman P.K. Subban said.

Canadiens Begin Season With 8th Straight Win

Andrei Markov crossed the 500-point mark with a career-best five points, and the Canadiens beat the Sabres 7-2 on Friday night to run their season-opening winning streak to eight games.

"Maybe, I just got lucky today," Markov said after finishing with a goal and four assists. "It's great to have eight wins, but tomorrow is another challenge."

The Canadiens are the second team in NHL history to begin a season with eight straight wins, all in regulation, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Sabres did it in 1975-76.

Montreal is two victories away from matching the NHL record set by the Maple Leafs in 1993-94 and matched by the Sabres in 2006-07
