Newark Gives OK To Devils' Arena

Sep 22, 2014 1:19 AM

First-year Newark Mayor Cory Booker formalized an arena truce between his city and the New Jersey Devils on Monday and reiterated his push for Governor Corzine to close Continental Arena. But a Corzine representative seemed to suggest Continental isn't doomed yet. "We have no information to suggest that both arenas can't be viable," Corzine spokesman Brendan Gilfillan said. "We hope they both can thrive." "We haven't drawn any conclusions yet, because we haven't seen any data to support one view or another," he added in a later phone call.

Hitchcock Won't Come To Phoenix

Nov 12, 2014 11:31 AM

Ever since Ken Hitchcock was fired by Philadelphia on Oct. 22, there have been rumors the 54-year-old coach could wind up in Phoenix, perhaps as Wayne Gretzky?s successor or in some other capacity within the coaching staff or front office. That won?t happen, Gretzky said Monday. ?Absolutely not,? said the Coyotes? boss, who despite his team?s poor start has repeated he plans to stay behind the bench. ?I can tell you the morning he left the Flyers I called him and had a nice 45-minute conversation with him, but more on a friendship basis. ?Unequivocally no, as far as coming on board with us.?

Canucks ' GM Nonis Says Free Agent Age "Is A Joke"

The age for free agents in the NHL "is a joke" and could result in the Penguins losing Sidney Crosby when he's just entering his prime, Canucks general manager Dave Nonis said Monday. "Pittsburgh is going to put seven years of development money into him and he can leave when he's 25," Nonis told a B.C. Chamber of Commerce meeting.

Fedoruk To Be Out Indefinitely

Nov 11, 2014 5:30 AM

Ducks left wing Todd Fedoruk will be out of action indefinitely after his right cheekbone was broken during his fight Friday night with Minnesota Wild enforcer Derek Boogaard. Fedoruk returned to Southern California on Saturday and was examined by team doctors Sunday, when X-rays revealed the fracture, a team spokesman said. The 27-year-old forward, considered one of the NHL's better fighters, engaged 6-foot-7, 250-pound Boogaard late in the second period. Boogaard connected with a punch that dropped 6-2, 241-pound Fedoruk to the ice. Fedoruk immediately left for the locker room under his own power.

Kubina Just About Ready

Apr 23, 2014 3:09 AM

It might not be long before a shaggy-haired, 6-foot-4 plug returns to help fill the hole in that leaky Maple Leaf defence. Coach Paul Maurice, whose club had allowed 33 goals in its seven previous games entering last night, said yesterday the team is very pleased with the recovery of defenceman Pavel Kubina. Asked if Kubina might return to the lineup some time in mid-November, Maurice broke into a smile. "I think that might be a bit conservative," he said. "I'm hopeful it will be earlier than that."
