?Eddie, Eddie, Eddie? were the chants that could be heard throughout the Air Canada Center during Ed Belfour?s tenure as a Toronto Maple Leaf. The only chants that are heard for current Leaf goaltender, Andrew Raycroft, are the boo birds. Why? Because Raycroft has been less than spectacular this season and Leaf fans aren?t used to having a goalie that is less than spectacular. Raycroft is following past Leaf goaltending greats such as Felix Potvin, Curtis Joseph and most recently, Ed Belfour. All are big skates for any goaltender to fill, especially for Raycroft, a young guy that has had one great season and one that was injury plagued. Leaf fans are used to having their goaltender winning games for their team night in and night out, and are furious with Raycroft?s inability to do so. Leaf fans have been privileged to see great goaltenders put on the blue and white and when a sub-par goalie starts to play like a sub-par goalie, fans get angry. But it was these same fans that were calling for John Ferguson?s head when he re-signed Ed Belfour before the lockout year and eventually had to buy Belfour out. Ferguson went out and got what he thought to be the next best option in Raycroft, essentially taking a chance. Despite Raycroft?s 37 total wins, it has been his inability to steal games for the Leafs which might be the difference between the Leafs making the post-season and not. Take for example Ryan Callahan?s goal on Sunday night that seemed to fool the Leaf goaltender and took all the life out of a Leaf squad that desperately needed two points. It?s been goals of Callahan?s quality that have killed the Leafs all year and have fans booing Raycroft on a regular basis. Maybe Ferguson should have stuck it out with Belfour who has endured a mediocre season but still better than Raycroft. Despite the obvious difference in contracts, Raycroft $1.8 million and Belfour $750,000, the difference in play has been miniscule. Raycroft has 37 wins, 11 more than Belfour but Belfour?s save percentage and goals against average are better than Raycroft?s. Should Ferguson have held onto Belfour or are Leaf fans too hard on a young inexperienced goaltender? The answer: the latter, as the Leafs have had seasoned goaltenders in the past. Both Belfour and Joseph were well into their 30?s when they donned the blue and white and Raycroft is only 26. Only time will tell if the Leafs plan to stick it out with him or hand the reigns over to highly regarded goaltending prospect, Justin Pogge.
