The Columbus Blue Jackets have named Karl Goehring assistant coach for the Syracuse Crunch, Columbus? American Hockey League affiliate, club General Manager Scott Howson announced today. Goehring will join head coach Ross Yates and assistant coach Trent Cull behind the Crunch bench. Goehring, 30, was originally signed by Columbus as a free agent on May 7, 2001. He spent five seasons with Syracuse from 2001-05 and 2007-08. He is the franchise?s all-time leader in games played by a goaltender (176), wins (78) and shutouts (11-tied), while ranking second in goals against average (2.58), fourth in save percentage (.915) and holds the team record for the longest consecutive shutout streak (197:04). The Apple Valley, Minnesota represented the Crunch at the AHL All-Star Classic on Jan. 28, 2003, where he finished tied with Marc Lamothe for best goaltender in the Skills Competition. In the 2008 Calder Cup playoffs, he went 7-6 with a 2.39 goals-against average and .922 save percentage in 13 playoff games and backstopped the Crunch to Game 7 of the North Division Finals. In eight professional seasons, Goehring has appeared in a combined 321 games with Syracuse, Dayton (ECHL), Jokerit Helsinki (Finland), San Antonio, Milwaukee, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Norfolk and Manitoba, going 139-125-35 with a 2.65 goals against average and .912 save percentage. Goehring spent four years at the University of North Dakota (WCHA) before turning pro and is the Fighting Sioux?s all-time leader in wins (80) and shutouts (15). In addition, he ranks second all-time in games played by a goaltender (118) and third in goals-against average (2.23) and save percentage (.918). He was a two-time First Team All-American (1997-98 and 1999-00) and was a member of the school?s 1999-00 Division I National Championship team.
