The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has signed defenseman Cameron Gaunce and goaltender Trevor Cann each to an entry-level contract. Gaunce, 19, was Colorado?s first selection (second round, 50th overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He was named to the Ontario Hockey League?s Second All-Star Team in 2008-09 after recording 64 points (17g/47a) and 110 penalty minutes in 67 games for the Mississauga St. Michael?s Majors. Gaunce, who ranked fifth among all OHL defensemen in scoring, finished third in voting for the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the league?s most outstanding defenseman. ?Cameron is a complete player,? said Avalanche Vice President of Hockey Operations Craig Billington. ?He?s a bit of a throw-back, a very assertive defenseman who brings size and competes.? The Sudbury, Ontario native led the Majors in assists and plus/minus (+28) and was second in points. He added 10 points (4g/6a) in 11 playoff contests. The 6-foot-1, 203-pound blueliner was tabbed by league coaches as the Eastern Conference?s ?Best Defensive Defenseman? and second-best ?Offensive Defenseman.? In 2007-08, Gaunce was named to the OHL?s All-Rookie Team with Mississauga. Cann, the Avalanche?s third selection (second round, 49th overall) in the 2007 Entry Draft, posted a 35-15-0-1 record in 52 combined appearances for the OHL?s Peterborough Petes and London Knights in 2008-09. The 20-year-old netminder finished second among league goaltenders in shutouts (6), third in wins and save percentage (.919) and ranked fourth in goals-against average (2.62). Cann, who was acquired by London on Nov. 7, backstopped the Knights to the third round of the OHL playoffs, compiling a 9-4 record in 13 postseason appearances. ?Trevor has a very strong fundamental base and a solid understanding of the position,? said Billington. ?We are excited for him to begin his professional career.? The Oakville, Ontario native just completed his fourth season in the OHL. Cann also has international experience with Team Canada, serving as Canada?s starting goaltender at the 2007 IIHF Under-18 World Championship.
