Before training camp began Rangers coach Tom Renney was quick to answer when asked about the most improved team in the division. "Philadelphia," Renney said. After gathering just 56 points, the lowest in the NHL, the Flyers underwent a major overhaul, starting at the trade deadline last season. Evidence of their improvement was on display last night when they whitewashed the Rangers, 5-0, at Madison Square Garden. But let's not award the Flyers a playoff spot just yet. In the first preseason game for premiere free-agent centers Chris Drury and Scott Gomez, the Rangers were prone to giveaways, sloppy in the defensive zone and awful on the power play (0-for-9). Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist was victimized by his defense and his own wandering from the net, as the Flyers scored five goals on their first 19 shots. Other than Drury, none of the Rangers stood out. About the only good thing was that no one was injured.
