Sam Pollock may not have been blessed with talent on the ice, but he sure could spot it. Pollock, who was born in Montreal but never played a game in the NHL, had an uncanny knack of recognizing ability. You need look no further than the nine Stanley Cups the Canadiens won during Pollock's 14-year reign as the team's GM from 1964-78. During his tenure, Pollock managed to pluck the first overall pick away from the Oakland Seals in 1971 in order to draft Hall of Famer Guy Lafleur and obtain goaltender Ken Dryden from the Boston Bruins for a pair of unspectacular prospects. He also acquired Frank Mahovlich and drafted Bob Gainey in addition to luring legendary coach Scotty Bowman away from the St. Louis Blues in 1971.
