Hannu Toivonen, 23, spent most of last season on the bench in Boston, backing up Tim Thomas. He played in 18 games, compiling a record of 3-9-1 with a 4.23 goals-against average. Boston demoted Toivonen to the American Hockey League in February ? for the rest of the season ? but then signed him to a one-year, $532,000 contract in April. He became expendable when Boston acquired Manny Fernandez from Minnesota on July 1. Under terms of the collective bargaining agreement, Toivonen would have to play in 42 more NHL games before he would be required to clear NHL waivers if the Blues decide to send him to the minor leagues. To get him, the Blues are giving up on Soderberg, 21, who was the 49th selection in the 2004 draft.
