Rangers GM Jeff Gorton announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Brendan Smith from the Red Wings in exchange for the Rangers’ own third round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and Ottawa’s second round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

Smith, 28, has skated in 33 games with Detroit this season, registering two goals and three assists for five points, along with 34 penalty minutes. He is averaging 18:44 of ice time per game this season, which is a career-high, and he ranked fourth among Red Wings defensemen in average ice time in 2016-17.
