Brian Burke, President and GM of the Maple Leafs, announced Wednesday that the club has signed free agent forward Spencer Abbott to a one-year entry level contract. Abbott has also signed an amateur tryout contract with the Marlies of the AHL and will join the Marlies for the remainder of the regular season and Calder Cup playoffs. Abbott, a 23-year-old native of Hamilton, Ontario played 39 games for the U. of Maine Black Bears this season and led the entire NCAA in scoring with 62 points (21 goals, 41 assists). The forward is a top ten finalist for the Hobey Baker Award given annually to the top NCAA hockey player. In four seasons at Maine, he registered 54 goals, 92 assists and 146 points with 66 minutes in penalties in 151 games played.
