The Tampa Bay Lightning unveiled the team?s updated logo and new RBK Edge uniforms today at IceFest 2007 at the St. Pete Times Forum. Lightning players Martin St. Louis, Chris Gratton, Filip Kuba and Johan Holmqvist were joined by local media celebrities for the unveiling. The Lightning logo, which has undergone changes for the first time since the franchise?s inception in 1992, can be seen along with photos of the new home and away jerseys at www.tampabaylightning.com. The updated Lightning logo is a modernization of the team?s classic lightning bolt with the contrast of black surrounding the bolt and the insertion of blue into the bolt?s interior to empower the logo?s impact. A new, custom typeface with angled letters is used for ?TAMPA BAY?, while ?LIGHTNING? has been dropped from the logo. These changes were made to provide a bold and unified icon. ?We have taken the opportunity that comes with the Reebok uniform redesign to modernize the crest on our sweaters,? said Ron Campbell, President of the Lightning and the St. Pete Times Forum. ?We don?t consider this to be an extreme makeover of any kind, but we think the people at Reebok did a great job at giving the Lightning a crisp new look, while maintaining the essence of the logo we wore while winning the Stanley Cup Championship and the spirit of the original design implemented by Founder Phil Esposito 15 years ago.? The secondary logo delivers a seamless transition into the refreshed shoulder patch featuring, featuring the state of Florida?s shape as the backdrop against the newly defined Tampa Bay Lightning bolt. The foreground is the focal point, encapsulating the team?s support across the state. The modernized Lightning logo will be featured on a new RBK Edge Uniform System created by Reebok for all NHL teams this season. The new uniforms capitalize on the new fabrications and material technologies made available through the RBK Edge Uniform System project. The driving force behind the design of the new Lightning uniform is enhanced performance for the athlete. Sleek new cut-lines in conjunction with new stretch fabrics create a greater range of mobility. Incorporating a water-repellent technology and ventilated mesh into the RBK Edge jersey and socks lend to a lighter player and conserves energy for the Lightning to strike late in the game. ?The new uniforms are definitely a step up from what we?ve had in the past,? said Lightning center Vincent Lecavalier, the 2006-07 Maurice Richard Trophy winner. ?The material is lighter and it doesn?t absorb water like the old jerseys, so you don?t feel like you have 10 pounds on your back by the end of the game. You feel faster.? The new Lightning jerseys feature the team?s traditional black (home) and white (road) base with a blast of blue through the arms to accentuate movement. Traditional Tampa Bay elements, including the lightning bolt pant and striped underarms, remain a strong visual constant for fans to embrace. The road jersey will include a new feature, including the placement of each player?s number on the front right chest area. Other noticeable changes to the RBK Edge jerseys include a collar that comes to a point in front, rounded bottoms with a longer flap in back and a sleeker fit.
