Blue Jackets Acquire Tarnstrom From Edmonton

RealGM Staff Report - The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired defenseman Dick Tarnstrom from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for left wing Curtis Glencross, club General Manager Scott Howson announced today.

Tarnstrom, 33, has appeared in 287 career NHL games, registering 33 goals and 98 assists for 131 points and 242 penalty minutes with the Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and New York Islanders. In 29 games with Edmonton this season, he has collected 1-4-5 and 40 penalty minutes. Prior to spending the 2006-07 season with HC Lugano in Switzerland, he split the 2005-06 season between Pittsburgh and Edmonton and helped the Oilers advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Tarnstrom was the Islanders? 12th pick, 272nd overall, in the 1994 Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the club in 2001-02 and notched 3-16-19 and 38 penalty minutes in 62 games. He joined the Penguins prior to the 2002-03 campaign and spent two-plus seasons in Pittsburgh, including 2003-04 when he set career highs for goals, assists, and points with 16-36-52 and 38 penalty minutes in 80 games.

A native of Sundbyberg, Sweden, he has represented his country in numerous international competitions. He has played for Sweden in three World Championships (2003, 2004, 2007) and was the top-scoring defenseman in last year?s tournament with 1-8-9 in nine games. Tarnstrom also played in the World Cup of Hockey 2004 and at the 1994 and 1995 World Junior Championships, where he won silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Glencross joined the Blue Jackets last season following a trade with the Anaheim Ducks. After appearing in seven games with the club in 2006-07, he collected 6-6-12 and 25 penalty minutes in 36 games this season. He has registered 7-6-13 and 27 penalty minutes in 45 career NHL games and 48-40-88 and 281 penalty minutes in 159 career American Hockey League games. [READ]
