| 22nd September, 2007 - 9:37 am | New York Daily News - For the first night of their preseason schedule, the Rangers put three of their most recent first-round draft picks on display.
But it was a second-rounder, 2004 draft pick Brandon Dubinsky, who made two sharp plays to set up goals in a 4-3 victory over the Devils last night at the Garden. Consider those assists - and his otherwise overall effective play - as the 21-year-old Alaskan's opening salvo in his attempt to claim what figures to be one open roster spot at forward.
Dubinsky was impressive at training camp and in the preseason a year ago, but spent most of the season in the AHL with Hartford. This time, Dubinsky is battling winger Nigel Dawes for the 12th or 13th forward slot on the roster.
Last night, he centered Martin Straka and Ryan Callahan at even strength. And his poised, deft feed across the slot for Straka set up the veteran's put-away goal that made it 4-1 midway through the second period.
Earlier, pivoting a five-on-three power play on which all the Rangers were 22 or under, Dubinsky made a similarly calm feed across the goalmouth for a Callahan goal.
Al Montoya, the sixth overall pick in the 2004 draft, tended goal for the first 30 minutes and stopped 12 of 13 shots. [READ] |
