Peca, Rangers Nearing Deal

N.Y. Daily News - Michael Peca's body has been examined by the Rangers' medical people, and his frame of mind has been probed by the team's brain trust.

The last step in the 33-year-old's quest to slot in behind Scott Gomez and Chris Drury among an impressive Rangers corps of centers is for a contract to be worked out.

That, according to both sides, should be the least troublesome step of all. Only trouble was: as of last night, Rangers GM Glen Sather wasn't quite ready to hammer out the deal. So upon returning to his Buffalo home after two days in New York, Peca remained hopeful but not yet certain that he will soon become a Ranger.

"I think it went as well as can be expected," Peca said of a two-day visit that included tests on the right leg that was fractured and surgically repaired last December and conversations with team officials, including assistant GM Jim Schoenfeld. [READ]
