| 2nd July, 2007 - 11:30 am | RealGM - Nashville Predators Executive Vice President/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has signed free-agent forward Jed Ortmeyer (JEHD OHRT-migh-uhr) to a two-year contract.
Ortmeyer, 28 (9/3/78), appeared in 41 games for the New York Rangers in 2006-07 registering 11 points (2g-9a) and a +7 rating. The 6-0, 197-pound forward, known as a strong penalty-killer, also appeared in nine of the Rangers? 10 playoff games and ranked among team post-season leaders in both hits (20) and blocked shots (9).
In 2006-07, for the second time in the last three NHL seasons, Rangers? fans voted Ortmeyer the winner of the team?s Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award, given to the player that performed ?above and beyond the call of duty.? The New York chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers? Association also nominated him as the Rangers? nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded to the NHL player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
The Omaha, Neb. native missed the first 40 games of the 2006-07 season after being diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism. Upon receiving medical clearance, Ortmeyer posted four points (1g-3a) in eight games on a conditioning assignment with the Hartford Whalers of the American Hockey League.
Ortmeyer has recorded nine goals and 15 assists (9g-15a) and 76 penalty minutes in 177 career NHL games with the Rangers. He was originally signed as a free agent by the Rangers on May 10, 2003 after a four-year career (1999-2003) at the University of Michigan (CCHA). He registered 51 goals and 66 assists (51g-66a-117pts) in 145 career games at Michigan, and was honored with the Hal Downes Trophy as the club?s most valuable player following both his junior and senior seasons.
Ortmeyer will be paid $750,000 in each of the two seasons of his contract. [READ] |
