Capitals Sign Nicklas Backstrom

AP - After a year of extra seasoning in his native Sweden, Nicklas Backstrom considers himself ready for the NHL. So do the Capitals.

The 19-year-old center signed his three-year, entry-level contract Monday, then was given his No. 19 Capitals jersey in what the team says will be the first of several improvements this offseason.

"This is another part of our rebuilding plan," owner Ted Leonsis said at a news conference at the team's practice facility. "He is another part of the foundation of the new core of the Washington Capitals." [READ]
