 The last in a series of 30 articles, we go through the history of every NHL franchise alphabetically and select an All-Time Roster for each. All stats as of January 19, 2012.
Washington Capitals (1974-Present)
Though he is still young and has played far fewer games than many others, Alexander Ovechkin has nine trophies, which equals the number of all other players in Washington history combined. After the top-three, the franchise has been a little weak on the wing, but they make up for it with a rich history of defensemen, where the likes of two-time All-Star Al Iafrate could not crack the list.
First Team
C: Dale Hunter (87-99): 5th most points (556), most PIM (2,003), -11 in 872 games, most playoff games (100) and points (72); 1997 All-Star; five 20-goal seasons; Team Captain 94-99.
W: Alexander Ovechkin (2005-Present): 3rd most goals (320) and points (650), +82 in 520 games, most OT goals (10), 2nd most power play goals (106), 50 points in 37 playoff games; 5-time All-Star; 3-time Ted Lindsay winner, 2-time MVP, 2-time Rocket Richard winner, 2006 Calder Trophy winner, 2008 Art Ross winner; four 50-goal seasons; Team Captain 2010-Present.
W: Peter Bondra (90-2004): Franchise leader in goals (472), points (825), power play goals (137), and short handed goals (32), +74 in 961 games; 5-time All-Star; eight time 30-goal scorer, led league in goals twice before Rocket Richard trophy was handed out.
D: Scott Stevens (82-90): 2nd most points by a defenseman (429), +72, 1,628 PIM in 601 games, 53 points in 67 playoff games; 2-time All-Star; four 60-point seasons; Hall of Famer.
D: Rod Langway (82-93): Franchise leader in plus/minus (+117), 202 points in 726 games, 18 points in 78 playoff games; 4-time All-Star; 2-time Norris Trophy winner; Hall of Famer; Team Captain 82-93.
G: Olaf Kolzig (89-2008): Far and away the leader with 711 games, and 301 wins (301-293-101), 35 shutouts, 2.70 GAA, .906 SV%, 20-24 playoff record with 2.14 GAA; 2-time All-Star; 2000 Vezina Trophy winner.
Second Team
C: Mike Ridley (86-94): 4th most goals (218), 547 points in 588 games, +49, 2nd most short handed goals (tied with 17), 2nd most playoff points (60 in 76 games); 1989 All-Star; five 70-point seasons, one 40-goal season.
W: Mike Gartner (79-89): 2nd most goals (397) and points (789), +60 in 758 games, 43 points in 47 playoff games; 4-time All-Star; nine straight 30-goal seasons; Hall of Famer.
W: Bengt-Ake Gustafsson (79-89): 6th points points (555), +31 in 629 games, 2nd most short handed goals (tied with 17), 28 points in 32 playoff games; six 20-goal seasons, six 60-point seasons.
D: Sergei Gonchar (94-2004): 2nd most goals (144), 4th most points (416) among defensemen, +51 in 654 games, most power play goals (53), 31 points in 51 playoff games; 3-time All-Star; four straight 50-point seasons.
D: Calle Johansson (88-2003): Franchise games played leader (983), most points by a defenseman (474), +47, 54 points in 95 playoff games; four 40-point seasons.
G: Don Beaupre (88-94): 2nd most games (269) and wins (128-96-33), 12 shutouts, 3.05 GAA, 18-15 playoff record (2.98 GAA); 1992 All-Star.
Third Team
C: Dennis Maruk (78-83): 431 points, -47 in 343 games, 1982 All-Star (136 points); three 90-point seasons.
W: Kelly Miller (87-99): 2nd most games by a forward (940), 408 points, +75, 15 short handed goals, tied for most playoff games (100, 47 points).
W: Jaromir Jagr (2001-04): 201 points, +1 in 190 games; 2-time All-Star; two-time 30-goal scorer.
D: Kevin Hatcher (84-94): Most goals by a defenseman (149), 3rd most points (426), -11, 999 PIM in 685 games, 48 points in 83 playoff games; 3-time All-Star; Team Captain 93-94.
D: Larry Murphy (83-89): 344 points in 453 games, 26 points in 42 playoff games; two 20-goal seasons; Hall of Famer.
G: Jim Carey (94-97): 2nd most shutouts (14), 70-48-19, best GAA (2.37), .904 SV%; 1996 Vezina Trophy winner.
Coaches
Bryan Murray (1981-90): Most games (672) and wins (343-246-83), most playoff wins (24-29), 88-89 division title; 1984 Jack Adams winner.
Bruce Boudreau (2007-11): 2nd most wins (201-88-40), best win %, 17-20 in the playoffs, four straight division titles; 2008 Jack Adams winner.
