When the regular season ended, the Washington Capitals topped the final OCTR of the regular season, slightly edging the Chicago Blackhawks. However when the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs ended, only one team moved on (Chicago) and neither were at the top of OCTR for the first round.

San Jose, on the strength of a strong goal differential (+1.34) and unworldly shot differential (+16 per game) led the way among all 16 postseason teams, with Colorado pulling up the rear due to the same factors. Washington was best among teams that were eliminated (7th) while Montreal was last among those that moved to the second round (10th). Remember that this formula was created to determine complete team play, one of the hopes was to eliminate the effect of a team succeeding solely on the strength of a hot goalie, as was the case with Montreal.
