Canadiens, Senators To Celebrate NHL's Centennial With Outdoor Game

Almost 100 years after Montreal and Ottawa played on the NHL's first day of action, the Canadiens and Senators will celebrate the league's centennial with an outdoor game.

The league announced Friday that the Habs and Senators will play outdoors Dec. 16 at TD Place Stadium, home to the Canadian Football League champion Ottawa Redblacks. The Canadiens beat the Senators 7-4. on Dec. 19, 1917, when the NHL began play.

Martin Havlat Retires After 14 NHL Seasons

Martin Havlat has announced his retirement after putting up 594 points in 790 NHL games over 14 seasons.

Nicknamed "Mach 9" for his skating prowess, Havlat played for the Senators, Blackhawks, Wild, Sharks, Devils and Blues. The 35-year-old announced his retirement on Wednesday through the NHL Players' Association.

NHL Eyeing Games In Sweden, China

While the NHL's participation in the 2018 Olympics in South Korea remains very much in doubt, the league and its players are close to finalizing two international events next season -- one in Sweden and one in China.

The NHL is awaiting word from the NHLPA on whether they will approve two regular-season games between the Avalanche and the Senators, in Stockholm, Sweden, on Nov. 10-11, as well as two preseason games between the Kings and the Canucks, in China, a source familiar with the discussions told ESPN.

The San Jose Sharks have traded forward Tommy Wingels to the Ottawa Senators for two minor league forwards and a 2017 seventh-round draft pick.

The deal made Tuesday helps clear up salary cap room for the Sharks if they want to make an addition before the trade deadline. Wingels is in the final year of a contract that pays him $2.475 million this season. San Jose will retain 30 percent of Wingels' remaining salary.

David Legwand Retires After 16-Year NHL Career

David Legwand announced his retirement Thursday, ending a 16-year NHL career that began as the Nashville Predators' first draft pick.

The 36-year-old Legwand had 228 goals and 390 assists in 1,136 career regular-season games with Nashville, Detroit, Ottawa and Buffalo. He's Nashville's career leader in goals (210), assists (356), points (566), game-winning goals (41) and games (956). He had five goals and nine assists in 79 games last season for Buffalo.

Sabres center Jack Eichel declared he's cleared every hurdle in recovering from a sprained left ankle, and coach Dan Bylsma said there's a possibility the center will make his season debut at Ottawa on Tuesday.

"We'll see," Bylsma said Monday, giving no guarantees that Eichel will play against the Senators. But Bylsma noted he was impressed by how the player performed during consecutive days of rigorous practices.

New York Rangers General Manager Jeff Gorton announced today that the team has claimed forward Matt Puempel off waivers.
Puempel, 23, has skated in 13 games with the Ottawa Senators this season, registering 12 shots on goal and seven penalty minutes.

He has posted a plus/minus rating of even or better in nine of the 13 contests he has played in 2016-17.
Puempel has skated in 52 career NHL games over parts of three seasons (2014-15 – 2016-17), all with Ottawa, registering four goals and two assists for six points, along with 24 penalty minutes.
