Julien: Canadiens Don't Need Drastic Changes

Feb 16, 2017 12:58 PM

Claude Julien's first goal as the new Canadiens coach will be to "create some pride" in the slumping club as he returns behind the bench.

But Julien, who was hired Tuesday to replace Michel Therrien, said he plans to "fix and tweak" the team's play, rather than make drastic changes, to guide it back to winning ways.

"We're going to play as a team, we're going to play with some pace, we're going to create some pride in all aspects of our game," he told reporters Wednesday during a conference call from Boston. "All the other adjustments system-wise, I'm going make them, but you can't come in the middle of the season and change everything."

Canadiens Fire Coach Michel Therrien

Feb 14, 2017 5:41 PM

The Canadiens have fired Michel Therrien and have named Claude Julien, the recently fired coach of the Bruins, as his replacement.

"I would like to sincerely thank Michel for his relentless work with the Montreal Canadiens over his eight seasons behind the bench, including the last five seasons when we worked together," general manager Marc Bergevin said Tuesday.

"The decision to remove Michel from his coaching duties was a difficult one because I have lots of respect for him. I came to the conclusion that our team needed a new energy, a new voice, a new direction. Claude Julien is an experienced and well respected coach with a good knowledge of the Montreal market. Claude has been very successful as an NHL coach and he won the Stanley Cup. Today we hired the best available coach, and one of the league's best. I am convinced that he has the capabilities to get our team back on the winning track."

Ryan O'Bryne Is Going Back To College

Aug 11, 2016 12:32 AM

Ryan O'Bryne is going back to being a full-time college student -- at age 32.

O'Byrne played more than 300 games as a defenseman in the NHL, the last eight with the Toronto Maple Leafs, so he's used to going with the flow. But any adjustments teachers and students might have to make to the presence of the hulking O'Byrne are nothing compared to the adjustment he is making.

"It will be a transition period, no question," said O'Byrne, who took to Twitter on July 21 to officially announce his retirement from hockey.
