Sabres Hire Jason Botterill As GM

May 11, 2017 1:29 PM

Jason Botterill is leaving the Pittsburgh Penguins' bid to defend their Stanley Cup title for an opportunity to build the Buffalo Sabres into a contender as general manager.

The Sabres hired the Penguins' associate GM on Thursday to lead a franchise that owner Terry Pegula criticized for lacking structure and discipline.

"We are very happy to welcome Jason Botterill to the Buffalo Sabres family," Pegula said in a news release. "Jason's hockey knowledge, experience drafting and developing players, and his approach to management stood out to us during our interview process. Jason has built a solid reputation as a leader that connects strongly with players and staff around him. We are confident he will have a positive impact within our organization and will help us get to our ultimate goal."

Terry Pegula Vows To Take Hands-On Approach To Fix Sabres

Apr 22, 2017 1:36 AM

Criticizing the Sabres' management structure for being flawed under its previous regime, team owner Terry Pegula accepted the blame and vowed Friday to take a hands-on approach to fix what went wrong.

The first step, Pegula said, begins with him directly overseeing the search to hire a new front office. He spoke one day after the Sabres cleaned house by firing general manager Tim Murray and coach Dan Bylsma.

"Accountability starts with me," Pegula said. "We are not happy with our season this year, and there are no excuses."

Sabres Fire GM Tim Murray, Coach Dan Bylsma

Apr 20, 2017 12:38 PM

The Sabres fired general manager Tim Murray and coach Dan Bylsma after the team missed the playoffs for a sixth straight year, the team announced Thursday.

Last week, Murray had backed Bylsma returning for a third season as coach. Murray, however, noted that the ultimate decision on Bylsma and his own future rested with owner Terry Pegula.

Murray's rebuilding plan took a step back this season. With a 33-37-12 record, the Sabres finished last in the Atlantic Division, with two fewer wins than the previous year.

Agent: Jack Eichel Not Pushing For Coaching Change In Buffalo

Apr 19, 2017 2:48 PM

If Buffalo Sabres coach Dan Bylsma's job is in jeopardy, star forward Jack Eichel's representatives say their client is not the one pushing for a change.

Peter Donatelli told The Associated Press on Wednesday that a coaching change was "not even on [Eichel's] radar screen" last week during the player's exit meetings with Bylsma and general manager Tim Murray. Donatelli said any suggestion that the second-year player is demanding a change is "1,000 percent false."
