Vegas Owner Defends Use Of 'Golden Knights'

Dec 7, 2016 1:32 AM

Vegas Golden Knights owner Bill Foley is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point but says that the naming of his NHL expansion team doesn't cross any lines with the U.S. Army, whose longtime elite parachute team also uses the nickname Golden Knights.

"I have complete respect for the US Army and all that it does for our nation," Foley told ESPN in an email after news surfaced that the U.S. Army was looking into the official naming of the 31st NHL franchise last week because of the shared nickname.

"Our development and use of the name Vegas Golden Knights was based upon Nevada being the largest gold producing state in the country and the golden tones of the Las Vegas strip," Foley wrote.

New Panthers Coach Tom Rowe Meets With Captain, Players

Dec 7, 2016 1:32 AM

New Florida coach Tom Rowe met with captain Derek MacKenzie and the rest of the Panthers' leadership on Monday. He talked to the whole team on Tuesday.

Rowe knows Gerard Gallant is well-liked in Florida's locker room, and Rowe wanted to be as transparent as possible on why the coach was let go just 22 games into the season.

"I came in and I told them, I said 'Listen, we're not going to change a whole lot. We need to tweak a few things,'" Rowe said.

"But if I came in here and wasn't sensitive to that, it just wouldn't work. I love our room. I love our leadership group, and we've got the right guys to help us get going."
