The Canadiens have locked up one of their core stars, signing winger Brendan Gallagher to a six-year contract extension, the club announced Saturday night.

The deal is worth an average of $3.75 million per season, a source told ESPN.com. 

Gallagher, 22, has five goals and 12 points in 24 games this season.

The Ducks strapped for healthy defensemen, acquired 16-year veteran Eric Brewer from the Lightning on Friday in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2015 draft, according to an ESPN.com report.

Stars forward forward Ryan Garbutt has been suspended for two games by the NHL while Jets forward Adam Lowry received a one-game ban for separate incidents this week, according to an ESPN.com report.

The NHL's winningest goalie, Martin Brodeur is headed to St. Louis for a tryout.

Brodeur will be at Blues practice Friday to begin working out with the team. 

"The Blues called us about the possibility of me going in there and having a couple of days of practice and to kind of have a mutual feel for each other and see where that takes us," Brodeur told ESPN.com via phone from New Jersey.

 Daniel Alfredsson, the former Senators captain, will announce his retirement next Thursday in Ottawa, where he began his All-Star career in 1995-96, a source confirmed to ESPN.

According to Forbes, the NHL now boasts three teams valued at $1 billion or more.

For the ninth straight year, the Maple Leafs topped the list of most valuable franchises, with an estimated value of $1.3 billion. The Rangers ($1.1 billion) and Canadiens ($1 billion) also hit that mark as the magazine conducted its annual analysis of team finances.

The NHL's average team value rose 18.6 percent to $490 million.

The Penguins needed overtime to beat the Bruins 3-2 on Monday night on Evgeni Malkin's goal 32 seconds into the extra session, and the club celebrated Marc-Andre Fleury's 300th career victory, according to an ESPN.com report.

Longtime NHL coach Pat Quinn died Sunday night at Vancouver General Hospital after battling a long illness. The two-time Jack Adams Award winner was 71 years old.

"Whether he was playing for a team, coaching a team or building one, Pat Quinn was thoughtful, passionate and committed to success," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement released Monday. "Pat's contributions to hockey, at every level, reflected the skills he possessed and the great respect with which he treated the sport.

"The National Hockey League, one of the many organizations to benefit from his devoted service, sends heartfelt condolences to Pat's loved ones and his many friends around the hockey world."

The NHL announced today that the existing terms of its suspension of Los Angeles Kings’ Player Slava Voynov will be continued indefinitely.

However, in light of the uncertain and potentially extended period of time that the legal process may entail, the NHL and NHLPA have agreed to permit the Kings to replace Mr. Voynov’s Salary and Bonuses pursuant to the Bona Fide Long-Term Injury Exception under the terms of the NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The Sharks have traded defenseman Jason Demers and a future draft pick to the Stars for defenseman Brenden Diillon.

The Stars will get a third-round pick in the 2016 draft in Friday's deal.

The 24-year-old Dillon has nine goals and 17 assists in 149 career games with Dallas.
