Jason Spezza To Have Back Surgery

Senators forward Jason Spezza will have back surgery Friday to repair a herniated disk, according to an ESPN.com report.

Senators GM Bryan Murray said it's too early to give a timeline for Spezza's return, but the team is hopeful he'll be play again this season.

Leafs Claim Frazer McLaren Off Waivers From Sharks

The Maple Leafs announced Thursday that the club has claimed forward Frazer McLaren off waivers from the Sharks.

McLaren played in one game for San Jose this season. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native also played 26 games for the AHL’s Worcester Sharks collecting one assist and 87 penalty minutes.

In 40 career NHL games, all with San Jose, McLaren has registered one goal, five assists and 85 penalty minutes. San Jose originally selected McLaren in the seventh round, 203rd overall, in the 2007 Entry Draft.

He is expected to join the Leafs at practice Friday.

Callahan Out Two Weeks With Dislocated Shoulder

Rangers captain Ryan Callahan will miss 10 to 14 days with a partially dislocated shoulder suffered Tuesday night against the Flyers, the team announced Wednesday.

Callahan was examined by Dr. Andrew Feldman and underwent an MRI on his left shoulder Wednesday.

Maple Leafs Send Jake Gardiner To Marlies

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Wednesday that the club has assigned defenceman Jake Gardiner to the Toronto Marlies of the AHL.

Gardiner, 22, appeared in two games for the Maple Leafs this season, registering four shots on goal. The defenceman missed the Leafs first two games of the season due to injury. Gardiner has registered 18 points (nine goals, nine assists) with eight penalty minutes in 23 games for the Marlies in 2012-13.

Rangers Beat Flyers, Lose Callahan To Injury

Rangers captain Ryan Callahan left Tuesday's 2-1 win against the Flyers after suffering an apparent arm injury during a third-period fight with Maxime Talbot.

There was no immediate medical update regarding Callahan after the game.

Coach John Tortorella said he had "no idea" how long the injury would sideline Callahan.

The Senators called up Mika Zibanejad on Monday, according to an ESPN.com report.

The teams' first selection, sixth overall, at the 2011 draft, was in Ottawa enjoying a few days off due to the AHL All-Star break when he received a call saying the Senators wanted him at practice.

"I got the call this morning so it was nice," Zibanejad said. "It was a bit surprising since I was on the break, but I'm just happy to be here now."
