Sharks Lock Up Marleau

Patrick Marleau agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Sharks on Friday, keeping the longtime captain with the club through 2010. After months of negotiations and public speculation on Marleau's future, he finalized a deal two weeks before training camp opens to stay with the club that drafted him in 1997.

The Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks have capped season ticket sales at 15,000 and opened a waiting list for all future orders. The team made the move to give fans a chance to purchase single-game tickets for the upcoming season. Those tickets go on sale Sept. 15.

Alberta Comes Through With $69 Million For New Hockey Canada Center

Alberta came through with a promised $69 million for a new Olympic ice training centre Thursday, but Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson is already setting his sights on other governments and the private sector. The cash, originally announced last November, will cover about 25 per cent of the new facility for Canada's national men's and women's hockey teams. The facility will be built in Calgary at Canada Olympic Park, where many of the 1988 Winter Olympic sports were held. It will include both an Olympic-sized hockey rink and a smaller, NHL-sized rink, as well as office space for Hockey Canada.

The Stars on Thursday re-signed left wing Jussi Jokinen to a two-year contract worth $3.625 million through the 2008-09 season. The 24-year old Jokinen appeared in all 82 games last season for Dallas, scoring 14 goals and 48 total points. The native of Kalajoki, Finland ranked second on the Stars in plus/minus (plus-8) and fifth in points.

The Thrashers on Thursday signed free agent defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Kwiatkowski had five goals and five assists in 41 games with the Panthers last season. He also appeared in one game with the Penguins after being acquired by the club in exchange for a fourth-round selection in the 2007 draft.

"I think he will play, but where I don't know," Timonen said. Flyers' GM Paul Holmgren reiterated that the Flyers don't have Selanne on their radar.

Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have re-signed defenseman Keith Ballard to a two-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. ?We are very pleased to have signed Keith Ballard to a new contract,? said Maloney. ?Keith has a great work ethic, plays hard and has a tremendous upside. We are excited to have him in our organization.? Ballard, 24, registered 5 goals and 22 assists for 27 points as well as 59 penalty minutes (PIM) in 69 games with the Coyotes last season. He ranked 2nd among Coyotes? defensemen in assists and points. The 5-foot-11, 208-pound defenseman also finished 2nd on the Coyotes overall in both hits (130) and blocked shots (135) and ranked 3rd on the team in time on ice per game (21:59). Ballard received the Coyotes? Hardest Working Player Award for the second consecutive season as voted upon by fans. In his first NHL season of 2005-06, Ballard collected 8 goals, 31 assists, 39 points and 99 PIM while playing in all 82 games. The Baudette, Minnesota native ranked 2nd among NHL rookies in assists and T-2nd points. Ballard also led all rookies in penalty minutes and shorthanded goals (3). Following last season, Ballard represented Team USA at the 2007 World Championships in Moscow and recorded 3 assists and 16 PIM in 7 games. He also helped lead USA to a bronze medal at the 2004 World Championships when he was the only NCAA player on the squad. Prior to joining the professional ranks, Ballard played three seasons at the University of Minnesota (WCHA) and twice helped lead the Golden Gophers to the NCAA Championship (2002, 2003). Ballard was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award in 2004 and earned WCHA First All-Star Team honors in both 2003 and 2004. The Coyotes acquired Ballard from Colorado with Derek Morris for Chris Gratton, Ossi Vaananen and a 2nd round choice in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft on Mar. 9, 2004. Ballard was originally drafted by the Buffalo Sabres (1st round, 11th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
