Joe Thornton Has ACL, MCL Surgery Before Free Agency

Apr 25, 2017 1:42 AM

Before Sharks center Joe Thornton heads into an uncertain offseason where he could be a free agent, he had more pressing business.

Thornton underwent surgery on a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee Monday to repair an injury that sidelined him less than two weeks before he returned to play the final four games of a first-round series loss to the Oilers.

"I've been in this business a long time," GM Doug Wilson said. "You see a player play with that type of injury tells you all you need to know about him."

Kings Name Assistant John Stevens New Head Coach

Apr 23, 2017 1:14 PM

The Kings named assistant John Stevens their new head coach on Sunday.

New GM Rob Blake announced the decision. Blake never expanded his search past Stevens, a source confirmed to ESPN, focusing his discussions only with Stevens in determining whether there was a fit.

"John and I had very productive dialogue this last week in relation to his head coaching philosophy and specifically how he would implement a strategy to activate our players offensively while maintaining the defensive philosophies we have come to be known for," Blake said in a statement. "I am confident that we are both in agreement on how that can be executed. With that said, we believe John has the ideal qualities to lead our hockey club. His wide array of coaching experience, including success as an NHL head coach and his inherent knowledge of our players and those in our development system, is very appealing to us. We are confident he is the best person to lead our hockey club forward."

Terry Pegula Vows To Take Hands-On Approach To Fix Sabres

Apr 22, 2017 1:36 AM

Criticizing the Sabres' management structure for being flawed under its previous regime, team owner Terry Pegula accepted the blame and vowed Friday to take a hands-on approach to fix what went wrong.

The first step, Pegula said, begins with him directly overseeing the search to hire a new front office. He spoke one day after the Sabres cleaned house by firing general manager Tim Murray and coach Dan Bylsma.

"Accountability starts with me," Pegula said. "We are not happy with our season this year, and there are no excuses."

Isles Looking At Belmont Park, Willets Point For New Arena

Apr 22, 2017 1:24 AM

The Islanders are looking at Belmont Park as the site for their new hockey arena and plan to submit a bid to the state of New York, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said Friday.

Bettman also mentioned the land next to the Mets' Citi Field in Willets Point as a possible spot for the team, while noting that the team's former home, a renovated Nassau Coliseum is "not a long-term option."

"Yes, there is an RFP [request for proposal] for Belmont and I know they are going to participate in that," Bettman told a group from the The Associated Press Sports Editors in New York, according to Newsday. "I believe that everyone thinks there is a terrific opportunity there, if not at Willets Point, to create a more hockey friendly environment for the Islanders, which is something [Islanders co-owner] Scott [Malkin] is committed to do."

Sabres Fire GM Tim Murray, Coach Dan Bylsma

Apr 20, 2017 12:38 PM

The Sabres fired general manager Tim Murray and coach Dan Bylsma after the team missed the playoffs for a sixth straight year, the team announced Thursday.

Last week, Murray had backed Bylsma returning for a third season as coach. Murray, however, noted that the ultimate decision on Bylsma and his own future rested with owner Terry Pegula.

Murray's rebuilding plan took a step back this season. With a 33-37-12 record, the Sabres finished last in the Atlantic Division, with two fewer wins than the previous year.

Agent: Jack Eichel Not Pushing For Coaching Change In Buffalo

Apr 19, 2017 2:48 PM

If Buffalo Sabres coach Dan Bylsma's job is in jeopardy, star forward Jack Eichel's representatives say their client is not the one pushing for a change.

Peter Donatelli told The Associated Press on Wednesday that a coaching change was "not even on [Eichel's] radar screen" last week during the player's exit meetings with Bylsma and general manager Tim Murray. Donatelli said any suggestion that the second-year player is demanding a change is "1,000 percent false."
