Fehr: NHL Players Won't Concede In Olympic Stalemate

Mar 24, 2017 2:31 AM

The NHL should not be waiting for the players to give up something in return for Olympic participation, NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr told ESPN on Thursday.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said earlier this week that if things stayed status quo, "assume we are not going" to the 2018 Winter Olympics. Many read that as an inference that the league wants the players to give something back so they can participate.

"I don't know what it can be from the players' perspective,'' Fehr told ESPN in a phone interview Thursday. "Obviously the players are not about to engage in collective bargaining in return for getting an opportunity to go to the Olympics for which they aren't being paid, where very valuable things would go elsewhere in return for that.''

Stamkos: 'When I'm 100 Percent, I'll Be Back'

Mar 23, 2017 1:44 PM

Lightning captain Steven Stamkos said he won't return to the lineup until he's 100 percent.

The 27-year-old forward has been sidelined since having surgery on Nov. 17 to repair a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee. He's been practicing with the team and described his progress as "slow," but he feels he's getting closer.

"When I'm 100 percent, I'll be back," Stamkos said after the team's morning skate. "Obviously, you hope that's sooner than later, but I have no control of the healing that goes on in the process."

NHL's Divisional Playoff Format Criticized

Mar 23, 2017 1:24 AM

In a cruel twist of the NHL's divisional playoff format, get ready to say goodbye to one of the three best teams in the league in the first round.

"I don't think it was designed for this," Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen said. "I don't think it was intended for this to happen."

The Blue Jackets, Capitals and Penguins could finish 1-2-3 in points, but because they all play in the Metropolitan Division, the second- and third-place teams will face off in the first round.

"It's stupid. It's the stupidest thing ever," Capitals forward Daniel Winnik said. "It doesn't work. It doesn't make sense."

Hawks Win To Clinch Ninth Straight Playoff Berth

Mar 20, 2017 2:26 AM

Toews scored twice, and Richard Panik and Artemi Panarin each had a goal in a span of 3:02 in the third period to erase Colorado's two-goal lead and send the Blackhawks past the Avalanche 6-3 on Sunday night for their fifth straight win.

The victory, combined with Los Angeles' 5-2 loss at Calgary on Sunday, clinched Chicago's ninth straight playoff berth.
